It is 10:00 and the boring game is over. The kids get TWO extra hours of sleep? For what? 10:00, isn't exactly late, but I guess some go to bed at 9? Geez?

Yeah, they should have said if the Steelers won, there would be a two hour delay, otherwise there would be no delay.

Pre-adolescents need around 10 hours of sleep (give or take), adolescents around 9. Assuming a 7-something start time and one hour for morning routine and transport, working back you get a bedtime for adolescents of around 9-something, and pre-adolescents of around 8-something.

I never went to bed before about 1AM once I hit 7th grade or so. Honors student.

On average, that is probably true, but we are talking about one day after a football game that ended at 10:00. Not the correct message to send anyone including kids. JMHO.

Who knows what you could have achieved if you had been well-rested?

Truth be told, I was also sleep-deprived for much of Middle School and High School. But the science is pretty solid: sleep deprivation is a very bad thing for kids. Here is one representative summary article (a review of some of the major studies is on Page Two):

Sleep deprivation has an immediate effect on the ability of children to learn in school.

We discussed this above, but I really think given how many kids are going to school sleep-deprived on a regular basis, the more important message to get out is that sleep is important, not that football is unimportant.

I've got news for you, kids are often sleep deprived even without the Super Bowl.

That's not the message the school sent. The reason was to tackle absenteeism.

In essence, the message was we'd rather you slept in for two hours instead of not coming at all. That's not a good message.

We agree a lot Brian, but not this time. I can't believe the city school kids are thinking to themselves, how important sleep must be since they gave us an extra 2 hours after the Steeler's game. Being someone that has had interaction with the kids in city schools, I am thinking they are saying, the school district knows we are going to party all night and they letting us sleep in, so that means we can stay up later.

Well they did it before, they did it today, and they'll do it again, I'm sure. Don't see what the fuss is about now. It's 9:50, the kids are probably all in school. How about the schools that did it that aren't anywhere near the city of Pittsburgh? Fort Cherry? Frazier? Central Valley? Penn Hills? Woodland Hills? I would say that unless it impacted you or your kids directly, why bother complaining about it? What's done is done.
