OP- Summer Hill/Westview/Bellvue are still fine atleast from what I know of... With Bellvue being the clear cut "grittest," which is still safe.*
*Northview Heights is the project housing neiborghood just south of Summer Hill. It borders Spring Hill, Perry North, and Perry South as well. So yea it's further down on the Northside.
Oh the way I read it I thought you were talking about Summer Hill; my bad. As I said before, from what I know from people who live there and what I see on the news, spill over crime seems just about non existent.

It doesn't seem to. Although Northview Heights is physical distance-wise not far from part of Summer Hill it doesn't share much in the way of roads or anything. I think there may be hills that make spillover not too likely. Plus, probably plenty of cops living in Summer Hill.

Northview Heights, what you do is get off 279 at Hazlett St and go straight up. Or turn onto Hazlett from East St. That's the main way to go in, though there is a road that heads out north toward Summer Hill and another that goes over that high bridge over 279. Plus, you can get to Spring Garden Ave I believe.

I too am looking at properties in the Summer Hill area. When we were driving around browsing the neighborhood to get a feel for it we took a wrong turn and ended up at those projects. They have security there and it's isolated back in a cut. When the guard let us through to turn around all we saw was one family getting out of their car and a young mother walking her child in a stroller. We ended up looking on the other side of McKnight road up off of Ivory. It was a very pretty well kept family neighborhood. You can also find statistics on the area showing it to be pretty safe. The school system is my only concern. The feeder school is only rated a 1 out of 10. I'm now looking into "Interdistrict Choice" options so I can try and get my kids into North Hills School District if we move there. If anyone in that area knows anything about that please let me and these other potential home buyers know.

I live in Summer Hill. It is the safest neighborhood in the city. Mayor Ravenstahl used to live there, his brother still does and lives across the street from me. To end up in Northview Heights, you have to make some serious wrong turns. Summer Hill is full of Pittsburgh employees, from paramedics (I am one), Police, fire, government, public works, and their families. It borders Ross Twp and Reserve. Rodenbaugh St is the border to Ross, and on the Ross side has what one might consider the "Projects of Ross", a few low income, section 8 houses, which are nice and keep to themselves. It is Pittsburgh Best kept secret neighborhood. Quick, immediate access to Mcknight Rd, 279, and 19. I strongly suggest Summer Hill as a place to live. Not to mention, its one of the few places in the city where you can have a decent yard.

It's so nice to see this thread updated with a positive report! I live on the crest of Spring Hill and we drive through Summer Hill now and then, when we feel like exploring the area, and I always get a good vibe from it. Very glad to know you would recommend living there!

Somebody mentioned earlier in the thread that Summer Hill doesn't have a business district. While this is true today, it wasn't always so. Summer hill was directly connected to the East Street valley up until the valley was bulldozed for I279. Pay attention when driving north near the exit for McKnight; there's still a set of steps coming down through the woods that ends abruptly.
