So, I'm looking for a decent bar where I can drink lots of good, varied kinds of beer. I love trying beers out from different local breweries from around the country/world. To my GREAT surprise, I went to the Qdoba in Oakland with only the intention of eating a mediocre burrito, when I meandered up to their bar and tried several local Baltimore brews called the Heavy Seas collection, and wow was it delicious. Anybody know of any good bars that have a wide variety of local beers from various places, preferably close to downtown/Oakland area? I've been to Penn Brewery, Church Brew Works, and East End Brewing many times. Any more that I'm missing?

D's in Regent Square tends to carry a lot of PA microbrews, both on tap and in their vast collection of bottles.

Fatheads has a huge selection on tap, though I'm not sure what percentage is local stuff.

Packs & Dogs on Shiloh Street has bottles only, but a nice selection and inexpensive too, for micros. Also, Beer Nutz on Freeport Road in O'Hara is my local place for various micros and Belgians.

Most of what people are recommending are mostly bottle shops. And while you can drink the bottle offerings there, they don't really provide much of a "bar" atmosphere.

Where beer bars are concerned, the city's two heavy hitters are The Sharp Edge (several locations) and Fat Head's on Carson Street. The Sharp Edge is more expensive and usually less crowded, at least at the flagship location in East Liberty and the Creekhouse location in Crafton. They also tend to focus heavily on Belgians. Fat Head's has a wider selection of American craft brews and a bigger tap selection overall.

IMO one place that gets overlooked by beer aficionados is Smokin' Joe's. It's also on Carson Street, about a mile or so east of Fat Head's. In my experience they have the widest selection among the city's beer bars and the most reasonable prices too. Both Fat Head's and Smokin' Joe's can get packed in the evenings so go in the afternoon if you want elbow room.

I guess it depends on what you consider a "bar atmosphere", but ever since D's took over the space next door and expanded their menu, lots of people go there to drink beer on the premises.

Edit: Here is a nice little article about D's, which I actually hadn't seen before:

The Rivertowne Pour House in Monroeville is SOLID. So is the Rivertowne Pub on Rt. 30 in N. Huntingdon.

I gave my advice on beer joints. If there is another kind of "joint" you may be interested in, let me know. I'll see what I can do.
