What about the North Versailles/East McKeesport area? I've seen a fair number of cheapish places around here (don't know your budget though), and compared to McKeesport it's a paradise.

It is not the most desirable place to live, but I know eight people that I went to college with who grew up in the projects in McKeesport and they are good, well adjusted, normal people. I commend you for being a responsible parent and wanting a stable life for your children. I'm sure you will be fine. I see that you home school and I am not judging, but please don't keep your keeds in a bubble. That will only open them up for problems in the 'hood' which McKeesport is. Outgoing, smart kids usually don't have issues, it is the socially akward kids that fall victim to gang life as they will be accepted. All of McKeesport isn't bad... I don't know a whole lot about the geography of McKeesprt, but I know the area near White Oak (and white oak itself) is not bad.

Thanks! I do keep them in activities outside of schooling, so they stay socialized. I am making sure of that! This was just such a good deal, and a quick payoff. I am so confused on what to do. my credit is not good enough to get a mortgage these days. Thats why I was trying to grab this owner financed one.

What about Elizabeth or Glassport. I have personally seen owner financed homes for sale on craigslist in these areas. Yes, these areas suck, but it's better than McKeesport. Also, Elizabeth-Forward is not going to win any awards for greatest sd, but it's still better than McKeesport. I don't know much about glassport and south allegheny sd. It's very small, dont know anyone that went there and never hear anything about it. If you're going to do the penn cyber charter thing, then schools won't matter anyway. I'd really look into other areas. McKeesport isn't the only place where owner financed homes can be found.

I second Love2Golf's post. There's lots of cheap housing in the vicinity that might be on the poorer side, but isn't "the hood." Liberty, Port Vue, Glassport, Dravosburg just to name a few immediate ones. In fact McKeesport and Clairton (below the tracks) are the only places I'd say to avoid. And the river towns to the north as well, Duquesne, Braddock areas. But that still leaves you with plenty of options. If you're not Sec. 8 then there's really no reason to live in the hood unless you prefer that kind of rough & tumble environment.

We're moving away from The City of McKeesport . We live near GW Elementary and we can't put up with the many disrespectful kids in the neighborhood. We don't want to worry about kids with guns, drug deals or home invasions. When the pizza delivery man was set up & shot at close to our house, we decided it was time to go! We have a young teen who wants to stay with McKeesport School District and friends. We found a house to buy in Dravosbuurg. Hopefully it's as nice and quiet as we heard it was.

I hope it works out for you! Although I think that pizza delivery boys have been held up in Glassport and Pittsburgh as well (so I don't think it's just a McKeesport problem)

Default ..

Thanks everyone for the advise. No, I am not on section 8. It was just a good deal, being owner financed. I am so confused. Seems everywhere I go anymore it is getting wierd.
I have had a few tell me to move there, and just do my own thing, and no one bugs ya.
And I have had a few tell me there will be bullets flying past my windows..ugh!!!! I just want to secure myself, and stop renting.
I checked on a few owner financed ones out there, and this was the only one that had no gimmicks, or games. it is a straight deal. I see some other homes around this house, that are well kept. Then of course some empty ones. I have driven around quite a few times, late at night. But it is tough in the winter. No one is out in the cold. To see what type of activitiy is going on.

If you want to live in that part of the county, give North Versailles a look. It's an older suburb, and it's seen better days, but it's safer, has an OK school district, and is located on U.S. 30, which is a major thoroughfare into Pittsburgh, and also out to the major population centers in Westmoreland County.

I did check that area. Not much luck. My problem is, my income is not that high. Which limits me to large down payments, and high payments. I have checked everywhere, and I am running out of luck, and rent prices keep going up. This is an odd time era!
