My husband, toddler, dog and I are considering a house in highland park, close to the park itself. Any negative comments? or any really positive ones? can you get food delivered there? is it sketchy being near the park at night to walk a dog? Thanks!

I found Highland Park fine by the park itself. Better yet, be around Highland Ave and further from Negley. It is more pricey there, but nicer. I like that little street called Graystone, if memory serves. I used to live on Stanton, but that was just okay. Overall, Highland Park is pretty nice the further you get from Negley and Stantonish.

Idk too much about Highland Park yet I can tell you
-the houses are pretty nice around the park... That area is safe...
-part of Highland Park from Weselley Ave. to Staton Ave. is pretty edgy.
-In my mind Highland Park (the park itself) is amongst the safest parks in the city... So I'm sure there's nothing to really worry about at night (assuming your not afraid of the dark).
Again, I really don't know too much about Highland Park...

I like Highland Park. You'll definitely be able to get food delivered there. I'm assuming you mean restaurant deliveries, not grocery store deliveries.

I'm not aware of any grocery stores delivering anywhere in the region. If you want that, you'll have to hire someone to do your grocery shopping for you.

We actually love Highland Park, and my philosophy has been, as others have mentioned, the closer to the park you are, the safer and more well to do the area is. Beautiful old homes, a great coffee shop, and a brand new restaurant called Park Brugge (by the owners of Point Brugge in Point Breeze).

I'm pretty sure Wheel Deliver delivers to Highland Park, and they have multiple restaurant options. http://www.wheeldeliver.net

I lived on the corner of Bryant and Highland Ave. It was a great experience and having the park there so close by, priceless.

I moved to Highland Park in the last 6 months or so, and I really love it. I think it's a great neighborhood, great neighbors, and being near the park is a big plus. You'll find lots of neighbors walking their dogs, biking, and running in the park in the evenings - totally safe. After dark the park empties out, of course, but it's never seemed sketchy to me.

And I've found that most of the East End restaurants deliver food here without a problem.

Good luck!

Park Brugge finally opened. Good news. The one in Point Breeze has a brutal wait. The few times that we have tried to go there.

I definitely agree that the closer to the park the better. I would also add that East of Highland is better. The cut off is Winterton. Jackson, east of Winterson isn't as nice.

Years ago before I got married and had kids I looked at a fixer on Jackson toward the park. It was 99,000. Good thing I passed because I would still be fixing it up today ten years later.

Highland Park is a great neighborhood in itself, but I would bring up one caution that many if not most of your destinations will likely be in Oakland/Shadyside/Squirrel Hill, and to get there from Highland Park one must travel through East Liberty, which is marginally sketchy but on the upswing. East Liberty is OK enough that I doubt anybody would have an issue driving or taking the bus through it, but many would not feel comfortable biking or walking through it. There's a solid line of bad from Garfield on the west over to Homewood on the east that one must cross; however, East Liberty is not as bad as what's to the east and west of it so it's a good place to cross. You can, however, get to downtown without going through any bad neighborhoods, by going over the hill on Stanton and then through Lawrenceville.
