You got me looking a little more on that site, they craftily avoid mentioning selling their items for drinking water as it's devoid of NSF listing, material safety data sheets, etc. TDS is by definition not filterable so at best that material is an ion exchange resin. I personally would not care to drink something that has passed through a mysterious material with no more accountability than a picture of two guys on a website. The gas guys even now have more identifiable responsibility than that.

Well, at least there has been a pretty quick reaction to the NYT story:

John Hanger, former DEP Chief, was quoted in this article but never asked to interview...

this makes me angry, as the public gets shafted when looking to get real information, but only gets misinformation.

here's a recent blog from John Hanger, where he gives a bit more information in regards to the above article.

Some testing results coming in (so far OK):

High radioactivity from Marcellus not found in 7 Pa. rivers

The EPA is also taking a very active role in this issue and offering to work with the DEP on a regular testing program:

No dangerous radiation found in Pa. water

Again, I'm glad to see there was a rapid response at both the state and federal levels, and of course I am also glad to see that so far, they haven't detected an actual contamination problem. But I do think this episode underscores the fact that proper oversight of ever-increasing shale gas exploitation in Pennsylvania is going to require a significant increase in resources, and in a time of a general state budget crisis, it makes no sense to refuse to levy a reasonable extraction tax on the industry in part to help provide those resources.

The more I look into this stuff, I guess there will be no where to be safe since the gas boom is here and will be here to stay. Wonder what are area will look like in a few years?

I don't think fatalism is warranted. The reaction to the NYT article suggests the DEP and EPA are responsive to public pressure. I think the industry is also starting to come around to the view that in places like the Northeast, they need to take this as a very serious long-term PR issue.

This will be the new norm. Hope it doesn't get like a waste land around here, but there is so much money to be made. Hope I can figure out a way to have clean water in my home without breaking the bank.
