Check out:

Bloomfield (for Friendship apartments which are in the neighborhood behind Bloomfield's business district). Also look at the businesses on Penn Avenue in Garfield on the other side to get a feel for what's available to Friendship residents.

Shadyside. It's in walking disance to Bloomfield/Friendship with Squirrel Hill on the other side.

Regent Square. Frick park is right next to it.

If you want lower rent, look at Highland Park and Greenfield.

Stay away from Southside and Oakland if you don't want to live near the undergrad crowd.
I definitely got the sense that Mt. Washington was not convenient, although an interesting mix of young and old (at least from my perspective).

I shall make an effort to run through Shadyside, Bloomfield, and Regent Square tomorrow. In terms of Highland Park and Greenfield, are there any serious drawbacks to these areas (beyond just being a tad further away - i.e. significant safety reductions, lack of shops, etc.)? Taking a quick browse on Craigslist I'm not seeing a big difference in housing quality (assuming you're selecting for the same amenities, space, etc).

Greenfield and Highland Park don't have significant business districts of their own compared to other areas you're considering.

Greenfield does have more readily accessible businesses than Highland Park, but not like the other areas you're considering. Greenfield is surprisingly convenient to the universities. It's just on the other side of Schenley Park which is next to Oakland.

Greenfield is a safe. Highland Park is safe too but it has areas that are sketchier. It all depends on your street smarts and your tollerance to city living. But if you're comfortable in Lawrenceville, you should be comfortable in Highland Park.

Another cheaper area is Morningside. It's safe but has zero businesses.
