Hi everybody,

we have now actually moved to Pittsburgh from Europe and very much enjoy it. This forum is VERY helpful, thanks for everybody that contributes.

We are looking for a sport our 3 (and a half) year old can participate in. Are there soccer classes for this age? Or swimming classes? Does anybody know?

thanks!

You are in my boat. My boys are almost 4 and almost 3. For the most part sports start at 4. However, every once in while there is something for 3.5 year olds. We do soccer a soccer class. We do ours at our local community center, Boyd Community Center. Also, look at your local Y to see what they offer. We belong to the Penn Hills Y and they have some classes for younger kids.

Swimming lessons is a definite possibility - try the YMCA (do not need to be a member, but non-members pay more) or JCC (membership required)

Depends on where you live. Where I live, the Twp. puts out a nice brochure every spring and fall for all the community related activities such as sports, classes, etc. There is something in their for infants all the way to seniors. Sports, computer classes, exercise classes, outdoor activities, etc...

Here is our spring flyer:

Maybe your Municipality has something similar?

As others have said, most soccer leagues start no earlier than 4. For swimming, we would personally recommend private lessons for younger kids. At the Downtown Y, they weren't much more expensive than a class, and the one-on-one experience was really helpful.

Thanks for your answers. I have checked the Y, but everything for kids is in the suburbs and we live in the city (area of highland park). Do you know anything there?

Pitt's KinderKinetics program takes 3 year olds. Program includes time in the gym and the pool. They just put out the form for their summer 2011 camp:

Home | Kinder Kinetics | University of Pittsburgh

The lowest level for Dynamo soccer is U5 (so 4 year olds can play). http://www.pittsburghdynamo.org/home.php ... but the spring rec league registration time is past so there may not be slots left --- something to keep in mind for the fall.

There is also Gymkhana ... not a sport, but definitely popular with that age group... Gymkhana - Home

Gymkhana actually sounds very good. With "sport" I simply meant exercise. The Kinder Kinetics also looks good, but we are not looking for a summer session or whatever those things are called. I have to say, this has puzzled us for a long time. All the daycares start in fall and before there is this session and that session - I am confused...

Look at the Boyd Community Center website for information. Boyd is in O'Hara Twp. which is fairly close to Highland Park.
