Pittsburgh has the second highest percentage of people who walk to work in the country. Only Boston ranks higher.

As one of those who does walk to work, I'm pretty amazed that it's so safe for pedestrians here since I almost get hit at least twice a week by some idiot running through a right on red or not yielding at a yield but maybe us Pittsburgh pedestrians are just quicker on our feet.

I was thinking the same thing. I have family in that area, and knowing it as I do I'd say that Pittsburgh comes my mind more when I visit St. Paul than when I'm in Minneapolis. St. Paul is more quaint and less glass-and-brass.

I think Katiana may have hit the nail on the head; in downtown Minneapolis (and St. Paul for that matter), there is a "Skyway" that allows you to walk literally all over the downtown business district without ever setting foot outside. No wonder fewer people are being hit by busses there.

Also, I'll add that Minneapolis - and all of Minnesota, for that matter - does a great job of creating beautiful public parks, usually using lakes as centerpieces, surrounded by walking and biking trails. Go to Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun on a beautiful Saturday in the spring and you'll find literally thousands of people walking, running, biking, and roller-blading. It's great.
