Any suggestions on other neighborhoods to check out. I had looked around Mount Washington and South Side flats due to their location, and wasn't really feeling the area. The houses seemed to not have been up-kept very well.

Looking for somewhere with easy access into and throughout the city. Somewhere with a nicer appearance than the two previous areas mentioned. I'm 30 and single, so don't want to be in a total residential area. I like my coffee houses and nicer downtown areas.

Thank You

Something to a similar to the NW section of Portland, Oregon is what i prefer. Close residential area, plenty of trees, small shops and restaurants. Having a park nearby or access to rail trails is a plus.

What is your budget?
Also, renting or buying?

My budget is fairly flexible. I'll mostly use craigslist to find someone looking for a roommate. I wouldn't want to spend more than $600 after utilities.

Would Mt Lebanon be something that fits what I'm looking for? Seems nice from what I can find online. How is it commuting into the city via the rail?

I would prefer somewhere closer to Downtown Pitt than Mt Lebanon, but i can handle some extra commute for the sake of having an area that I'd like to live in.

Shadyside, Squirrel Hill and Regent Square are the default answers here.

Shadyside is a nice looking community with shopping and restaurants, and you'd be less than 10 minutes from town if you found a place near the Negley or East Lib busway stations.

Sounds good. Will grab the mountain bike and check out that section of Pitt. Any differences you can give between the those three?

Any difference between North and South Squirrel Hill?

Shadyside is probably most up your alley. It's the young professional/grad student/gayborhood (just a descriptor not a pejorative!).

Squirrel Hill is more spread out, lots of old money, some serious mansions and gated communities whose property taxes are probably higher than my income LOL. There's also a big Jewish presence. Naturally the closer you get to Shadyside and the Universities, the more it takes on the characteristics of those neighborhoods. So North is probably more what you're looking for than South, though Forbes & Murray right in the center seems to be the bustling "downtown" part of Sq Hill, so really "Central" is probably the best answer.

Regent Square is a nice quiet little grid of houses that cuts into the east side of Frick, with close Parkway access, but beyond that isn't really close to anything that useful or urban (well, "good" urban anyway).
