The people I talk to in Homewood tell me to stay out of Wilkinsburg for safety.

In 1997-2007 there were 51 homicides in Wilkinsburg... In Homewood South there were 41... Homewood all combined had 60 some... I've posted the link before but I'm operating of a flip phone so wait a sec.

How many of those killings were in the Whitney Park neighborhood which is close to Regent Square? I'm only interested in that part. Information about other parts of Wilkinsburg are irrelevant to me.

I can't remember of there ever being any homicides in Whitney Park in the last 35 years that I've lived in the area.

I'd be very surprised if any of those homicides occurred in WP. I've lived in WP or RS throughout that entire period, I try to follow these things as closely as possible, and I'm not aware of a single such death.

Sorry its an overall map. There are five sets of the Larimer And Wilkinsburg (LAW) Gang in Wilkinsburg: J-town Hoods, Trill Side Gang, F-BloCk, Uptown Rides & Hunter Park Gangstas. From crime maps indicate that they claim turf in: Franklin, the area around the Highschool, Hunter Park, Park Triangle, Upper Penn, part of: Hamelet Place, Priceton Park &Singer Place, which are all on the other side of the busway... I would note West of the busway is pretty safe from an current outsiders perspective!

You would do better to go to some AA or NA meetings, and find out what other folks in similar shoes have done for alcohol/drug rehab.

There are many options for this kind of service, Harbor Light, Cove Forge, Mercy Behaviorial, Salvation Army, etc.

AA and NA meet every day of the year, good luck on this.

I drive through this area routinely as my kids attend preschool on the corner of Braddock and Penn. The new Lower School of the Environmental Charter School at Frick Park is also located in the old Park Place School on Braddock. I would agree that the specific location of the house in question is definitely in the transitional area between good and bad. Park Place definitely has a pretty safe vibe to me, but further east it changes quickly. I have driven through those blocks, taken my kids to the Wendy's, and their preschool has had the kids walk to the Pennwood nursing home to visit the residents. I have not personally encountered any safety issues and would probably not outright veto my own daughter living there...but I would feel better if they were more firmly in Regent Square/Point Breeze/Squirrel Hill. It's a hard call though.

As far as commute to Oakland, I work at Pitt and agree it's about a half hour door-to-door from there to walking into my office door.
