The amount of times I've seen this headline the last few weeks is truly astounding. I just picture workers and cars scrambling around this thing constantly. Wouldn't it be better if they just closed it for the months of March and April for this very reason?

Or does those 100 or so parking spaces really mean THAT much cash?

My thought is always: what a glutton for punishment you are if you rely on parking there.

People park there because it's cheaper than other nearby options, I think, although if it wasn't there they might have trouble finding space. We don't have a real oversupply of parking downtown.

Who's bright idea was it to make that into a parking lot anyway?

We've had an inordinate amount of rain so far this year, so that has led to the Mon Wharf being closed so much. It normally isn't closed this often.

^ This.

According to Weather.com for 15219:

April 2011: Approximately 5 Inches through today (with more heavy rain coming Friday and Saturday)
Departure from Average: +2 inches

March 2011: 5.72 Inches
Departure from Average: +2.5 inches

I believe January and February were also above-average.

There's been above-normal precipitation in Pittsburgh during every month of 2011 so far.

People will park on the wharf even if it looks like its flooding.

15-20 years ago, there was a lot on the river at Sandusky St, where Alcoa is now.

I would walk across that bridge daily, and see people parking where their tires would be getting wet. and the lot attendant would let them. And as often as not, they wouldn't be able to get their cars out later because of high water.

There has been parking on the wharf for about 100 years.

There used to be parking on the Allegheny next to the 10th Street Bypass. Never reopened after the winter 1996 flood. (Became part of the so-called two-level park that they did when moving Ft Duquesne Bvld.) We had a birds-eye view of the water coming up that Friday. They tried to start moving the cars but then had to abandon that. The water came up amazingly fast.
