Probably river temperatures/air temperatures causing some fog. It will burn off later in the day.

"What is with the smoke? or is this smog?"

Neither... just fog, like h_curtis said.

You've never seen fog?

Here's a definition for you.

Fog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's not pollution. It's not smoke. It's not smog.

It's like a cloud that is near the ground.

That one on the left is probably how it looks sometimes when I drive into work. Get down near the rivers and the fog is thick!

Who knew? You don't have to live in San Francisco for more than a few weeks to know that the city waxes poetic of its fog and it defines the city, as in Carl Sandburg's words of fog "coming in on little cats feet." But you pragmatic Pittsburghers would never think of doing such things....

Nope, that was not fog...this was where you couldn't see the homes on the mountain next to Mt Washington...it looked eerie...and nothing like the two photos above, those are beautiful, if it looked like that I would have pulled over on the side of 376 and take photos...

I think part of it was because as you take that 376 exit right where downtown starts, going towards Squirrel Hill, there was something burning up sending a lot of smoke up in the air...I am not sure if that's a building but the top of it was sending a lot of smoke up in the air...at first I thought it was supposed too, but when we came back it was not...so I guess whatever that was, they put it out. I'll have to find a photo and zoom in a lot so I can show you what had smoke coming out of it...
