Im glad maybe this will be the eye-opener anti-public transit pushers need to see happen....

And the big take-away from that article - no one, absolutely no one, wants to take public transit from the suburbs. Anschluss jetzt?

Quite - best to reduce the cost somehow. So we need to hire some very unsympathetic people, then every week select a wealthy family from the North Hills, kidnap one of their children, and send a severed body part each day until they cough up $1 million. Use the proceeds to subsidize transportation into the city - that would lower the cost of a bus ticket. After the first dozen or so innocent corpses, people might even be willing to make a voluntary contribution, which could be assessed on the basis of income, property value, or number of children.

$10 is still much less than driving if you consider all the actual costs and upkeep of a vehicle that rides in and out of the city daily.

Pittsburgh does really lack good public transportation, but I blame the people who live here more than the companies providing transportation. Sure the bus drivers make WAY too much money, but there are too many people driving into the city every day.

But Driving a bit further to the PAT lots is cheaper than the 10$ which is what people have started doing.

So you're saying a private company can't compete with a heavily subsidized one that operates on a loss every year? Is that surprising, or is it supposed to be indicative of something?

The long suburban routes are the big losers for Port Authority, and that's why they were discontinuing them in the first place.

Too many non-revenue miles as they are basically deadheading it back to the garage or the beginning of the route after dropping off in town.

The only places that transit can make money under the current fare scheme is on the heavy duty city routes where people are being picked up and dropped off all along the route. A 50 seat bus might get a hundred passengers if its on the Negley or Highland Park busses.

Impossible on a Franklin Park flyer route as people aren't getting off but in one location.

Maybe PAT should start charging $10, which apparently is what it costs to run such a route & they won't always be in the red
