I heard on the local news this evening that there are serious talks going on about a soccer field being built where the Trib Total Media Amphitheater was in Station Square. It would be the home of the Pittsburgh River Hounds.

I don't know what to think of this. Would love to hear what people think.

I like the idea. The Trib Total Media Amphitheatre is built to be easily dismantled and temporary. This would be great for the team and great for the city. We have Stage AE now, which is a superior venue, and can be used in various formations.

Being a soccer fanatic, I LOVE THIS NEWS! I would get season tickets in a second! Was there any mention of the River Hounds joining MLS?

I question the sustainability of such a venture here in Pittsburgh as I don't believe we have the population or the widespread interest to support an MLS team. If they decide to move forward I'm pulling for them to prove me wrong.

I don't see the harm in building a small stadium in the space currently occupied by the Trib venue. At worst, couldn't it still be used for concerts as a soccer stadium? Maybe Duquesne could move some of their athletics (football, soccer) to the new venue and develop the Rooney Field space for other uses? Does Point Park field teams? Maybe they could use it as well? How about local high schools? I know Cuppies is just down the road but perhaps the city schools could sell the land and lease time at the new stadium? Maybe it could save them some money.

The land is currently underutilized and unattractive, I'm all for it.

The Riverhounds have existed for years playing at high school venues in the suburbs. I've got to imagine they have a pretty dedicated fan base to have stuck around for so long when they get little/no local media attention. I'd imagine having a dedicated home downtown could do wonders for them.
