Hi everyone. We currently live in the Crafton/Ingram area. We are renting right now but will be looking to buy a home in the near future. Our kids are all really young (under 4) and we would like to live in an area that has other families with young children. We need a place that is outside of the city because we can't afford private schools. But it needs to still be within Alleghany county because of my husband's job. Can you suggest some areas on both the north and south sides where we can get a house for under 200,000 that have lots of young families? Thanks!

Consider Ross Township. Close to town, easy commute, newly (or soon to be) renovated elementary schools, and solid homes under that price point. It's also easy to get to many kid-friendly activities - 15 mins. to the zoo, 10 mins. to the North Shore/North Side, 10 minutes to North Park, plus great libraries. Most neighborhoods will have homes with young children.

Ross is a nice township. But neighborhoods with older houses often have a large percentage of empty nesters and less families with younger children.

New construction is where the families with children congregate in larger percentages.

I don't think you can find newer construction for under 200k, except for townhouses, like in the Seven Field's area, but townhouse communities are not usually child friendly.

Almost anywhere you go, there will be young families, but the dream of living in a neighorhood filled with children isn't really a reality.

You'll increase your odds if you chose a house in a neighborhood that is densly populated with houses and many streets nearby.

If you select a house in a one or two road development surrounded by woods, there will be less playmate options within walking distance.

How about...Crafton? I always see a lot of young families/children in the area when we are walking around.

We're enjoying the reality of a neighborhood filled with chidlren right now! Three bedroom homes go for around $140 - $180K in our Ross neighborhood, and there are so many children that activities like Santa breakfasts, egg hunts, Halloween parades, and a summer camp are organized by the families each year - all in walking distance to our homes.

That's great! It would be helpful if you posted the specific neighborhood since it's not the norm! You sure lucked out! I'm happy for you!

Thanks everyone. This is really helpful. I would also be interested in the neighborhood in Ross you are talking about as it sounds like it is exactly what we are looking for.

Aspinwall has a ton of kids that are able to use sidewalks, go to the park and zoo. Kids would be going to Fox Chapel School. Aspinwall is O'Hara Elementary. If you get up to the North Hills stuff, you will be having to drive the kids to play with others most of the time unless you are in some planned development. Very different than the Crafton feel.

Here's a current listing from our neighborhood, Kathryn! This house is in a particularly convenient spot near the park.
