Considering a rental listed as being in Overbrook, specifically at Dartmore St. and Midwood St. I will be moving with my wife and our 1 year old son (and two dogs), and looking for insight on the safety, commute to Oakland, and just any general input on the area.

I'm living in an efficiency at Murray and Forward now, my wife and son will be moving from Ohio. Can't wait to have the family back together, and looking for a safe community.

Where is your commute? Maybe Aspinwall would be better due to the school system.

If you don't have a problem with PPS, you can get into some good magnet schools. I have some friends that send their children to Carmalt and love it there.

I lived in nearby Brookline and liked it a ton. Very family oriented and close to a lot of stores, transportation, and libraries.

Dartmore and Midwood is convenient to the T, there is a walkway to the t stop after you cross 51.

If you commute to Oakland on public transport , its a transfer in town to a Fifth Ave. route from Steel Plaza.

No real walkable grocery shopping from there.

I lived in Overbrook for a year (Before we bought our house last year). It was a nice place, lots of families with kids (Though I think my puppy liked that fact a lot more than I did...) and it has a general community atmosphere.

Great everyone, thanks so much for the info!! We are still looking for places, but this one really sounds like a good fit. I'll be commuting to UPMC at lothrop and fifth.

Will look in Brookline and Aspinwall too. I'm not from Pittsburgh and I really don't know my way around at all, but I had to run out to the VA in Aspinwall a few months ago and the area seemed really nice.

Hi Patrick,

I live a few blocks from that intersection but drive past it daily.
If you have any more questions about Overbrook let me know - though not as familiar with the area as some, I moved to Overbrook in May 2010 so I have a fresh perspective.

Aspinwall and Brookline are very different neighborhoods in very different parts of the city, so be prepared for that.

While I do like Overbrook, it does have some faults, primarily traffic (as does everywhere in the South Hills) and lack of a true business district down near 51. However, if you're willing to use the public transportation and don't mind transferring downtown before heading into Oakland, commuting from Overbrook would be a breeze!

Hope that helps!
