Was Froggy's a fern bar? How about the BBC on Penn Avenue? They tended to be singles bars in downtown areas, for office workers.

The title of this thread always makes me stop for just a moment.

Yes, Froggy's was reported to be a fern bar, in this contemporary column by Peter Leo in the Post-Gazette.

I was only in Froggy's once but I don't remember it being anything but a dark smoky Pittsburgh bar but it's been fifteen years so I may be misremembering.

It's just funny how perceptions change over the years. If you'd asked me to describe Froggy's, I'd have said that it was a typical old-time Pittsburgh bar but from Leo's point of view back in the early eighties, it was an example of a new emergent Pittsburgh.
