So apparently the owners of Mario's in the SouthSide have purchased Doc's in Shadyside and are turning it into another Mario's. Anyone heard anything about it. Not that this is anything earthshattering as Mario's isn't anything special, I was just curious if what I heard was true.

That's interesting that one of the places that became popular in the 1980s is buying another. Marios is one of the first bars that drew people to the South Side in the 1980s with their yards of beer. I lived in Shadyside fron 1985 until 1990 and hung out at Docs quite a bit. I went into Docs fairly recently on a Wednesday and it was dead. Wednesday used to by the night at Doc's. It had the exact same decor and had not changed in twenty plus years. It seemed to be growing stale.

I think there are so many more options in Shadyside now than there were years ago. In the early 90's you had Doc's, Cappy's and the Harris Grill. Think how many new places have opened up. I think that more families have moved into the East End has also transformed the bar scene.

That's true. There were not that many options then and I remember that being a topic of discussion at the time in such an otherwise busy neighborhood. There was the College Inn on the corner of College and Ellsworth, where now sits a vacant property controlled by Burns and Scalo. There was also the Balcony and in the basement of the same building was Hot Licks wings. Of course, some older forumers go back to the Raspbery Rhinocerus days and also the Gazebo. That was more like 1970s Shadyside. Does anyone remember The Artery on Ellsworth? It is where Soba Lounge now is located. It opened around 1990 and closed only a few years later. It was a gallery, eatery, performance space. I remember seeing Rusted Root there.

Yep, shedding a tear here if it is true about Doc's. Spent many a Wed. there out on the deck or even inside during inclement weather.

I am not really shedding any tears over it. Doc's could have used a facelift long ago. Mario's is similar in style, but they don't have a Ruben Pizza.

I was talking to someone that knows the owner of Docs and they said he sold it to Mario's. Not sure when the transfer is taking place, but seems it is a done deal.
