A couple items. First, they are starting the first phase of the Mellon Square renovation:

Mellon Square gets attention in $8 million update

The first phase involves restoring some lighting, fixing the staircases and cascading fountain along Smithfield, and adding a terrace (originally planned, but never implemented) over the retail section along Smithfield. Eventually the whole thing will get a makeover--should be cool.

Second, planning for the Strip District/Produce Terminal project is moving forward, but they are debating what to do with the Terminal:

Strip District produce terminal on a trail to demolition

The Terminal is a landmark and preserving and restoring it would keep a lot of character in that area. But it also serves as a continuous barrier between the inner Strip and the river. The good news is that no one is contemplating tearing it all down, but they are debating between tearing down about a third (on the end nearest the 16th Street Bridge), or rather carving some passages at cross streets.

Personally, I go back and forth on which plan I prefer--tearing down 1/3 seems drastic, but it might be better to do that if you can then preserve a large section totally intact.

I was glad to see some indication in the article that the Pgh Public Market will be allocated a new space - that's important to me, and I hope URA & co stick to it.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Even if there is other stuff also going on in the renovated Terminal, the Public Market is such a wonderful fit it should definitely stay (and hopefully expand).

Nice WSJ article . . . I suspect the new PNC tower is going to set off a wave of such articles:

Edit: Apologies for the paywall.
