Strip District produce terminal on a trail to demolition

I hate to see this happen, but I like to see the riverfront developed more. I'll have to side with Buncher and the URA on this one. This valuable property has sat vacant for far too long. Let's not delay it any longer.

I tend to agree. The produce terminal itself isn't architecturally significant and it's not being razed completely. This kind of riverfront development is long overdue.

As I noted in another thread, I go back and forth between the plan to take off a third, and the alternative plan to cut passages through at cross streets. The more I think about it, though, the more I kinda prefer taking off a third.

I just hope Buncher does a good job with the developments. Their track record to this point is deplorable.

Agreed. They have sat on this property for not years, but decades. You have had acres and acres of readily developable land sit dormant until SeaGate and Hampton Inn were erected a few years ago. This property should have been marketed and been developed years ago. It is basically Downtown, save a railroad tressel dividing it from the CBD. Yes, parking is important. However, parking need not hog up such vaulable urban property along the riverfront.

No opinion in particular. Just don't want to see a demolition and...nothing happens.

As long as they keep a good section of the produce terminal and restore it, I'm okay with this.

I'm a proponent of carving portals in portions of the produce terminal (at cross-streets) to permit pedestrian-scale access to the riverfront. I don't see any merit in just hacking off 1/3 of the end of the building, and I definitely do NOT want to see it demolished. Without a doubt, though, portals are necessary because this building IS in the way of linking the Strip with the river.

Even with taking off a third of the building, I'd still think a pedestrian portal in the middle of the remaining section would be a good idea. It is a massive building and would still be a good 2-3 blocks long. We were down there for the Cirque show recently and had a rough time getting over into the strip. It took us about 10-15 minutes to walk all the way down along the building on the eastern side, across the tracks, and onto Smallman St.

They can tear the whole thing down, AFAIC. It's old, but neither architecturally nor historically interesting. I'd rather see the Civic Arena survive than the Obstacle of Smallman Street, and I'm perfectly willing to let the Civic Arena go, even though, after the Cathedral of Learning, it's the building that says "Pittsburgh" the loudest.
