What I DON'T get is the general bitter vibe from PSU fans (even their administration) that Pitt is just a fill in because a few dates were open and nothing more. Kind of like they were slotting another Akron or Temple into the schedule. Have a little respect for a great rivalry, people! Even those four games from 97-00 were great games that spiked interest (from BOTH sides). And Pitt was MUCH more irrelevant back then (and PSU more of a power).

I think PSU is a little scared to renew the series. They still have a dominance when it comes to PA football, even though it has been diminished. Losing games to Pitt would only serve to further shift the balance of power.

Rumor has it that PSU has been amicable to the 2 game home/away for a number of years and that Pitt was holding out for something longer. Hopefully two great games will help extend the series. Of course by that times schedules will probably be set through 2025!

Actually, Penn State - JoePa in particular - never wanted a home/away with Pitt.
They wanted 2 home and 1 away, which Pitt would never agree to.

I don't know if it really matters anymore that Pitt plays Penn State from a football perspective. From an emotional perspective? Hell yeah people will get into that.
No, the ACC and Big East were pretty much on par in both football and basketball. The leverage the ACC had is Miami obviously was a better fit geographically in the ACC and that pulled BC and VT. VT was able to twist Virginia's arm through Virginia's lawmakers to get in instead of Syracuse.

However, rivalries transcend any logic you can throw at them. I see Georgia Tech get beaten by Georgia year after year and they are in different conferences. But no one would even think of ending our "Good ol'fashioned hate".

The rivalry really is held by middle aged folks in Western PA that still remember the good ol' days. Today's students at Penn State really don't care about Pitt anymore.

I think current Pitt students are generally the same way. The general dislike is there but its tempered since we are 11 years removed from the last game. It still beats the heck out of games with MAC teams or teams like East Tennessee State every year. Wouldn't take much to really get the rivalry rekindled.

Maybe now that OSU's program is in shambles, Penn State may actually have a chance at winning the Big Ten this year? Then again, they still have to go through Michigan and that unbeatable powerhouse that is Iowa, so it's pretty unlikely.

Every Penn State fan I know talks up their conference and how they have to play Michigan and OSU and OOC opponents like Alabama....but 9 times out of 10 they LOSE those games. Every year it's the same story in Happy Valley, they roll over teams like Akron, Temple, and Syracuse by 50 or 60 points, move into the top-10, get everyone on their bandwagon and then lay an egg as soon as they see that O or M on the opposition's helmet.

Penn State has been second fiddle in the Big Ten since they joined. Pitt hasn't done anything great lately either, but at least there's not this delusional elitist attitude coming from the Panther faithful.

Penn State draws over 100,000 a game to watch a mediocre football team. Pitt is lucky to draw 30,000 to watch an equally mediocre football team. It's not because their program is superior, it's because there's nothing else to do in State College. Give those 100,000 people the kind of entertainment options that Pittsburgh has on a Saturday afternoon and see how many of them pay to watch their mediocre football team.

This argument makes no sense - do you really think that there are 110000 people living in State College that have nothing else to do but go to a football game?

Those 110000 fans travel from all over the eastern seaboard to watch PSU play - they don't live in State College.

I hope that you were just joking and are in fact aware of the population of State College....

This is just a dumb comment from someone that obviously doesn't even watch football. They had a bad year in 2010, fine. From 2005-2009 they averaged 10 wins a year and won 2 big 10 titles in 4 years, but ignored all of that and claim they're mediocre based on one poor year? And the people talking up Michigan are nuts. Didn't psu put up an Avg of like 48 points per game on Michigan the last three beating they gave the wolverines?
RichRod was a joke and got taken behind the woodshed by JoePa, repeatedly. Also, how does JoePa's recruiting look so far?

Seriously, Penn state-pitt is like watching stillers vs browns. Like the browns, pitt fans talk a ridiculous amount of trash for a team that has achieved absolutely nothing since 1985. Just like how Browns fans talk up all of their " championships" back in the 40s and 50s, pitt fans pathetically brag about having 9 national titles, despite only 1 coming after the great depression. Stick to bragging about your basketball team pitt folks. Talking up your football team makes you look delusion. Oh yeah, Rushell Shell isnt going to pitt either. He knows a loser when he sees one...he plays for Hopewell where he can run for 400 yards and still lose 24-21.

It's because JoPa is averse to travel and wants more home games. Probably why PSU plays Temple so much. PSU typically has 7 to 8 home games.
