When you have someone posting pictures of a burger and claiming it to be the greatest thing since sliced cheese at every opportunity, I have to speak up. Wingharts is okay. The burgers at Cross Key's were much better, but they retired. Of course we are talking about the owners of Laforet, which won best restaurant in Pittsburgh a zillion times. I think I am going to visit Tessaro's soon. I want to see if it has really gone down the tubes as I have heard. It is a shame if it is true, but I fear it is.

BRGR is what Pittsburgh is about. Huge TV's everywhere and okay food. That place wouldn't last a day in NYC, but here it is considered okay.

Burgers first need to be thick with 18% fat in the meat. Then the meat needs to be seared on both sides to lock in the juices and create the outer bark. If being cooked on a flat top griddle, the burger should be covered by a lid until the desired degree of wellness is achieved. During this part of the cooking process cheese may be added if desired. The end results is a juicy burger flavored by the trapped fat and moisture of the meat. The best results are achieved over oak coals or natural wood charcoal such as mesquite.

Please don't waste your money on good food cooked on a gas fired grill unless you enjoy the pyrotechnics.

pittsburgh is lacking in mexican food for sure (honestly what i'd like to see is a san francisco style burrito place), but there's more than one place.
Every time I see a thread discuss the lack of good Mexican food and someone else points out a taco stand, it makes me sad.

Nothing against a good fresh taco, but that's street food. When someplace in this town learns how to make a really good red snapper veracruzana, let me know (and don't say Verde, their 'interpretation' of that classic doesn't cut it).

I am not engaging in a burger debate....although I did enjoy Burgatory & Tessaros.

I agree there is a lack of Mexican food in Pittsburgh. A very good unique fusion place in Homestead called Smoke is worth a look. (I think it is a Mexican, southwest & asian) It gets really high ratings on UrbanSpoon & Yelp. It is quite good and the owners are really nice, but all the hype made me expect perfection...I just got good food. It has been consistant..3/3 good unique food! The lines are long (call ahead) and it really is more of a take-out joint.

I apologize if this place was brought up before, I am simply to lazy to scroll back 20+ pages!

hey, you have to start somewhere!

there isn't much good mexican (or latin american) food here cause there aren't a lot of latinos here. simple as that. i'm pretty happy to see the latino community increasing in the last 10 years or so for that reason (when i first moved here goya products were expensive specialty items that you could only find in the fanciest giant eagles!) but there's still a long way to go.

i haven't been to verde, for some reason i find that place pretty unappealing. oh there's also alma, i haven't been there so i can't comment on the quality but i'd like to try it. as long as we're lacking in a latino population you're going to see more high end places like that (usually run by white people) rather than hole in the wall homestyle places though.

Yes... but that morsel of common sense won't stop us from incessently whining about the absence of authentic Mexican dining experiences in Pittsburgh!

i have a feeling some of the same people who complain about that would also complain about all the damn mexicans stealing jobs if we did get a big influx of latinos!

Please don't knock latinos. As a whole, they are some of the hardest working people I've seen in modern times. I'm very happy to live in a community that has a large population of hispanics.

By the way, we don't lack in great Mexican restaurants.

I don't think groar was knocking latinos as much as she was suggesting that the general populace would bemoan their existence if we had a larger latino presence in the city.

What's a really good Mexican restaurant in Pittsburgh? This isn't a challenge, haha. I don't get Mexican much, so I don't know. I've been to Mexico City and Yo Rita. Would Yo Rita be considered good, or no? I'm not very picky, so I think I have much lower food standards than most people. If it's not fast food, I'm generally happy, haha.

I've heard good things about Casa Rasta in Beechview, but it's a more of a Mexi-Caribbean fusion thing.
