I can't read the entire article because I'm not a subscriber. Is the Craig St. location closing, too?

I still don't understand why they moved from Squirrel Hill and Downtown to Craig Street and Lawrenceville.

This is sad for me personally. I became friends with James and Andrew, and was a charter customer at Dozen. I had my first Key Lime Pie cupcake the day after they opened, because they sold out on opening night. I will miss them (though I hadn't been eating at Dozen much since being declared "pre-diabetic" in March). When they opened, there was nowhere in Squirrel Hill, and lots of other neighborhoods, to buy real cake.

I liked their cupcakes as well as many of their other pastries, e.g., cinnamon rolls, French toast muffins, and I will be sorry to see them go. I probably went to more Sunday brunches there than I missed. My favorite thing was a kind of Croque Monsieur James had been serving recently.

I wish James and Andrew every success in the future. I hope they stay in Pgh.

I think the fad wasn't the cupake itself, I think the idea of running a business based on various gourmet flavors of cupcakes is the "fad," along with coffee and a sandwich.

No, these highly-priced gourmet cupcake shops are fads. When people are referring to "the cupcake fad", they aren't talking about the pastry in general, but that specific trend.

I enjoyed the place. Frequented the one on Craig street occasionally. Nice place to take a lady for dessert after a meal on Craig street too. A good atmosphere to sit and chat with some coffee. The cupcakes were large and I didn't think they were any more expensive than getting dessert at a restaurant. Oh well.. another local business dies. I suppose it would have been better off in a different city where people wouldn't consider it such a "fad"

Everything new is a potential fad. The new idea will either fizzle and be coined a fad, or it will have long-lasting success and just be accepted.

I don't see how a cupcake shop is any different than a donut shop, and nobody scoffs at the idea of a place that just sells donuts. My local Dunkin Donuts charges $.99 for a donut, so I don't think that $2.00 is asking to much for a hand-made cupcake.

A cupcake shop recently opened in downtown Greensburg; I hope that they don't meet the same fate.

Hopefully they will have more success. There will be tougher competition but if they are smart about not expanding too quickly and pick the right neighborhood they may have luck. The demographics may be more conducive to business.
