Haven't been there in years, but can't wait to visit again in a few weeks. So excited. After reading everything on these boards & the internet about Pittsburgh, and in talking w/ people over here who have either visited or lived in your city, I have fallen in love.

The "Pittsburgh Promise" is the clincher. We're moving there in 2013 once we're free of work/school obligations here.

I worked all day today so I haven't had time to respond to your post and say "welcome" until now.
I think you will enjoy living here. Despite the city having some obvious flaws it really is a nice city to live and raise a family. There is no Utopia anywhere. The good will outweigh the bad when a city is willing to actually help back you financially with the cost of your childrens education. It's too important and it is something that has been becoming increasingly harder, if not downright impossible for parents to do for their children anymore.I think you made a good decision.

Please enjoy your upcoming visit as well. I just hope while you're here that we don't have another heatwave like the one we suffered throughout last week! UGH!!

West Seattle Gal. In a previous post you expressed some concern about the alleged crime rates in some neighborhoods or zip codes. I've done some research on this subject myself and while I did not have access to the FBI Crime Stat's like I did many years ago (via my local library in Connecticut) I have been able to find enough basic data that can show which areas are safe and those that are not. I'm happy to report that even some of the alleged worst neighborhoods in Pittsburgh like Perry Hill South, Observatory Hill, McKees Rocks etc. all have crime rates that are considerably lower than many of the so called "good" areas of Kansas City. So, in essence, even the neighborhoods in KC that are considered to be relatively safe or safe, are in reality, not all that safe especially when compared to the marginal and especially the good neighborhoods of Pittsburgh.

The following statement will give you an idea of just how confident I would be if I decided to move to one of the areas I just mentioned. I would live in many of the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh with the possible exceptions being Homewood, Wilkinsburg, Penn Hills and a few others that I probably am not quite aware of yet. However, I would not even consider living within the city limits of KC ever again or even most of the suburban communities because crime is a real problem.

In a nutshell, I am certain you can pick from several good neighborhoods and find one that will work for you and your family. I hope your move comes to pass. Sounds like you have a similar situation to mine in that you are tied down to your current home for at least another year or two before you can make a move.

The Pittsburgh promise is a scam. Local corporations donate money to get the local democrat- socialist party off their backs, as well as the unions and race-baiting blacks. Of course, they set the bar so low that only a 2.5 gpa can get the scholarship. That's on purpose, since they know that anyone with a 2.5 gpa will be headed to ccac, if they go to college at all, and most likely will have their cheap tuition paid for with a pell grant, therefore upmc and bny-Mellon get all the good publicity while paying out a fraction of potential scholarships. This is why these corps discriminated against the white suburban kids. Had they included mt.Lebanon, Franklin regional, and moon they would have to really shell out the big bucks. Of course, they could pay tuition for these inner-city kids to go to better, private schools, but that would anger up the unions and have the democrats on their back. When liberal politicians and big corporations join together and mske you a "promise", watch out. SAT scores have fallen through the floor since this garbage was put in place.

The Pittsburgh Promise is no scam. The bar is set so that anyone getting a 2.5 GPA AND ABOVE can get the scholarship. This is done to encourage more low-income students to go to college. Students available for the Pgh Promise ALSO include people getting the 4.0's at the high schools, such as Taylor Allderdice and going to the best schools around. Taylor Allderdice High School is a Pittsburgh Public High School.

They don't include the wealthy suburbs because those families can, by and large, afford to send their kids to college not because of some anti-white kid discrimination. Research has long shown the link between low-income communities having less education, and consequently less income. If someone feels discriminated against they are, of course, welcome to move into the City limits and send their students to Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Each year Newsweek publishes a listing of the best high schools in the USA. Only 6% of American high schools make the list. Of the three suburban schools listed above (Mt.Lebanon, Franklin Regional and Moon) only Mt.Lebanon made the most recent, 2010, list. Pittsburgh Public School's own Taylor Allderdice HS was ranked as a better school than Mt.Lebanon, while Franklin Regional and Moon didn't even make it.

From the public school options of the Frick Environmental Charter school, Linden Elementary School, CAPA High School, and Taylor Allderdice High School - the Pittsburgh Public School System offers some of the region's best public educational opportunities. You do need to do your homework to make sure your kids will go to those schools depending on the community where you live. There are some terrible and unsafe schools as well, so you've just got to pay attention, ask questions, and make informed decisions.

That being said, welcome to Pittsburgh! We love it here, too!

Love2.-Ask David Morehouse, the Pittsburgh Penguins CEO about the disservice that CCAC does by posing as some sort of college. He graduated from CCAC, then went on to Duquesne U and Harvard afterwards where he got a Master's degree. Morehouse also served in various Directorships not only at Harvard U. but in the White House as well.

CCAC has 170 degree programs available. The college in recent years had the nation's 3rd largest number of Healthcare degree graduates, and the nation's 2nd largest number of Nursing graduates with Associate degrees. You can't tell me with numbers like that, the college doesn't have very solid educational programs.

The Community College of Beaver County has the #1 Aviation Training Program in the nation. It is the only college in the U.S. equipped with an onsite Air Traffic Control Tower that is utilized in their Degree in Air Traffic Control Program. These graduates make a good buck as Air Traffic Controllers. They make more money than many other graduates in degreed occupations from the other so- called " better" universities.

The cost at these community colleges is under or about $100. per credit. That Promise scholarship $ goes a long way for a good education.

Yea the Pittsburgh Promise is a scam. That's why I got with with a 3.9 GPA in high school and now am a good student in the Polumbo School of Business at Duquesne. By the way, half of my graduating class was white so quit being a race baiter. None of the burbs were included because it was started by the PITTSBURGH PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Get real

West Seattle Girl,

Rest assured,- as you have seen from the many responses preceding my own- that everyone on the forum is in agreement that "LoveToGolf09", and I mean this in the kindest possible way, simply doesn't have even a cursory education on many if any of the topics on which he posts, which can be difficult for people seeking things such as factual knowledge, actual data, and basic truth.

As many have pointed out, it's rather certain that many CCAC graduates grossly out-earn and have hugely out-succeeded "LoveToGolf09" at life in general, evidenced not only by examples cited above such as David Morehouse, but also by the general mix of bitter politics and impirical misinformation disseminated by "LoveToGolf09" that rarely if ever lends itself to corporate or social success.

As others have pointed out, move to Pittsburgh, locate yourself in a school district of a highly successful Pittsburgh Public like Taylor Alderdice, have your kid get at least a 2.5 GPA, then reap ridiculous financial savings concerning his/her future, and when your child is 23 or 24 years old with a great high paying job and virtually no student debt, feel free to inform him/her of www.city-data.com, at which point they can
explain in even more detail to "LoveToGolf09" why turning this forum into a quasi-Limbaugh political rant-fest tends to soon drown in a vast sea of facts.

Peace...welcome to The Burgh. We're not perfect, but having seen the pro/con list of most places in this country, we got a pretty good thing overall going on.

I never said anything about the quality of education at ccac, so I don't know why you're talking about how much graduates from there make since there wasn't the point of my post. A little reading comprehension goes a long way. The difference between you and I is that you aren't much of a thinker. When you read about the Pittsburgh Promise, you,re thinking "zomg, free stuff!!!!" while I read more into the details to see what's really going on. You're just not a details-oriented person, and that's fine. Just don't insult those of us that do research to educate ourselves rather than sitting back, watching Dr.Phil, and accepting Mayor Luke's rhetoric as the gospel. Some of us free-thinkers would rather live in reality than the mindless hope and change utopia that you're addicted to.
