Wilkinsburg Woman Goes on "Low-Car Diet" - Forest Hills-Regent Square, PA Patch

Of course Ms. Rogers isn't the only person to live car-free (or nearly so) in the Pgh metro, but it's good to see this option get some publicity. I doubt it's coincidental that she lives in Wilksbg - it's one of the easiest places to live with minimal access to an auto.

Only 30 days and this is blog-worthy? Who knew. I live in a city neighborhood also and don't consider going car-less such a novel concept.

I go car-less 6 days out of the week as it is since moving here in January and haven't thought twice about it, even coming from areas where I've had to drive my entire life. I only drive when I am making big multi-stop shopping trips or traveling out of town.

Maybe this is more novel for suburbanites?

LOL I know what you mean--my family has always been "green" and "frugal" long before those became trendy ideas. We just considered it "old fashioned common sense living", the same sort of things my parents and grandparents did. I walk to work now because my parents always insisted that I walk to school, and it's about the same distance. To me it's just a life long habit, not a big deal.

But, OTOH, I agree that giving publicity to this sort of thing is a good thing even if it does seem a little silly to me. It probably does encourage people to try those basic ideas of earlier decades (even though they think they're doing something "new"and "green").

The Patch is a very local paper, and I think the "news" is that a local woman is one of the three Pittsburgh-area participants in the 12-city Zipcar challenge.

Hmm... the Zipcars aren't exactly convenient to either Wilkinsburg or Regent Square.

If there was a Zipcar in Regent Square we might well try going carless.

Anyway, I assume she is using ones around CMU.
