Wow -- forgot about this place. Used to love it back in the day -- but it is kind of off the beaten path. Those french fried mushrooms were amazing!! And I do recall they had excellent steaks cooked on a wood fired grill.

The Ranch House on Rodi Road always had a good steak. I have not been there in a while, so I do not even know if it still exists.

I used to eat at that place when it was known as Mr. Steak, and then the Rodi Grille House.

Maybe it's just my childhood speaking, but to this day I maintain that Mr. Steak had the best salad bar and chicken fingers I've ever eaten, and the Rodi Grille House had the best bowls of French onion soup I've ever eaten.

you are all missing the best steak place of them all, Golden Corral. All you can eat steak, so chewy that it takes a good 30-40 minutes just to cut and eat one steak but in all seriousness I really would suggest Ruths Chris, best steak that I personally have had

I am not sure if it is still open or good, but I had a great dinner at Mantini's Woodfired On Carson street a few years ago. Pittsburgh does not seem have a lot of steak houses other than chains.

I know you asked for recommendations other than the chains, but one of the very best steaks I've ever had was the Capital Grille's dry aged porterhouse. Fantastic, in my opinion. Haven't had much luck with steaks at local, non-chain restaurants.
