Ok....another question. What areas have the worst road construction right now? Which areas to avoid? I'll be coming into pitt via 279N.

there's some pavement work supposed to be starting soon on the parkway north - Pavement work to close Parkway North - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

I'm not sure how reliable the following links are, but I glance over them before I head out as well.

Rt 28 right now is STUPIDLY bad at the moment. It is USUALLY one of the easiest ways in and out of the city and one I travel almost daily. It is torn up to high heaven and we're talking miles and miles of it.

Beware!!

I-376 Eastbound will be closed this weekend, next weekend, and the weekend after Labor Day weekend. If you're going to go towards Monroeville or those places between Friday late evening and very early Monday morning, you'd want to avoid this route.

Two good sources for construction information is a weekly Post-Gazette article (the one from this past Sunday is Construction around the region) and also PennDOT's site at PennDOT District 11-0, Allegheny County

I-79 from Neville Island to the I-279 junction is all torn up as well. I was driving from the South Hills to Cranberry Township last Saturday, and I think the trip would have been faster following US-19 the whole way!

I tried to go to the Green Tree area from Fox Chapel yesterday. Route 28 South has construction. A simple trip turned out to be a huge headache. After sitting on 28 for eternity, I later was stuck on the bridge to the Fort Pitt Tunnels for over an hour. I don't think that was construction. It must have been an accident on the Parkway West outbound. I gave up and looped back into Pittsburgh and went home after 1-1/2 hours of trying to go somewhere that usually takes me 15 minutes.

When I lived there the running joke was that the state flag of PA is "Men at Work"! I am willing to bet that almost everybody brand new to PA will blow at least one tire in a hidden pothole! LOL
