Some people are talking about renaming the 16th Street Bridge in honor of noted author and native son David McCullough:

Proposal would name bridge after author

The obvious comparison is to the Clemente, Warhol, and Carson bridges, and I think adding McCullough to that list would be fitting. To me the 16th Street Bridge also feels right for McCullough--it has a particular sense of history and gravitas about it.

There is a long process ahead if this is going to happen, and as the article notes they are also looking at selling naming rights to raise cash, but I'll be rooting for this idea.

I believe that it would be a nice honor for McCullough, a very fine author, and someone Pittsburgh should be quite proud of. I've read a number of his books, and enjoyed them all.

I think that would be fitting. I know that selling the naming rights is a way to raise money, which is always needed, but I'm weary of everything being a commercial. My favorite corporation will the be the first one, when granted naming rights to a stadium, actually names it after someone deserving of the honor instead of itself.

Hah, that'll be the day! If was up to Romoff & co., Pittsburgh would be renamed UPMCburgh.

I'm posting this eight days late, but the renaming is official.

With its golden arches, it could have been the McDonald's bridge (and thank goodness it isn't).
