My son has requested for his birthday to go to a good old fashioned home cooking place. (note: we are from the South) He qualified this by adding "you know a place that would have great stuff like meatloaf". No chains please---give me your best!
We live in the north hills--would not mind going as far as southside area but not much more south or more than about 35-40 minutes away.

That's a tough one here in the Burgh!
Now if you were going to Lancaster County, I could point you to a ton of Amish home style cooking places.
When I am up here, unfortunately I have to hit the "chain" type places like Golden Corral, Old Country Buffet, Old Towne Buffet, Eat N Park, Ponderosa, Cracker Barrel, etc, to find the "stick to your bones home cooking entrees."

I too would love to find a good old "mom and pop" homestyle restaurant in the Burgh with great food, but haven't yet after all these years.

I don't know what their lunch is like, but Cole Cafe on Mt. Royal Blvd. has pretty awesome breakfast food.

My favorite place for that isn't in the burgh. It is in Saxonburg. It is called the Contrary and it is GREAT.

Homemade pies that you have to have as well. I love the onion rings. They are really thin and homemade. If you are in the North Hills, you might not be that far away. I would highly recommend it. I know there are places around Pittsburgh, but I am having trouble thinking of some. I will post back if you think my suggestion is too far.

Maybe you might want to try Piper's Pub, 1800 block of East Carson?

They have some good "stick to the ribs" fare on their menu like Shepherd's Pie.

I'll second that recommendation. They have great beef stew.

I had a meatloaf at Six Penn (in the Cultural District) that I liked quite a bit. Generally Six Penn does a sort of contemporary twist on comfort food.

Thirded. My family loves their Shepherd's Pie and Guinness Stew.

I guess the biggest question is, how old is the son?
If he is under 21, would Pipers be appropriate?
I've never been in to know if the bar is separated from the eating area.

My son is 28 but he has Aspergers--so not your typical 28 year old. I should add that anything really noisy would not be a good choice for him. And to hCurtis--Saxonburg is actually very easy for c us--that might be a winner.
