Hello All,
I was wondering who are some of the better home contractors in the area? We are relocating to Pittsburgh area and my husband is a general contractor who has owned his own business for 20+ years both where we are now and in NYC. He wants to get to know the local contractors in the area before possibly striking out on his own. I know some of the bigger home builders are Heartland, Ryan, etc - but who are the smaller more personable home builders. My hubby specializes more in remodeling but has done ground up work too, so he is looking at all aspects. Thanks so much for any and all info that you might have!

Our regular contractor does work of all sorts, has been in the business forever, and knows everyone (or so it seems). His company is Commonwealth Heating & Remodeling, and his name is Les Dukehart.

I'd recommend the same contractor above.

I don't know how this company continues to get away with their scams. A friend made the unfortunate mistake of calling them on a weekend last winter after their furnace died. The Gillece repairman showed up quickly, but immediately "determined" they needed a whole new furnace for $6000. After laughing the guy out of his house he called another HVAC firm the next day. Turned out if was a simple $10 part. This does not appear to be an isolated case. While charging outrageous prices is not illegal, fraud is.

Same thing happened to me with Gillece. They wanted 1600 for a job that was actually 100. I saved Gillece's invoice. God, they charged me for the air they were breathing during this job or something. They must be doing good business since the are on the cover of the phone book and have ads everywhere.

I called a plumber off of Angie's List last year, and he said that a good amount of their business is fixing jobs that Gillece messed up.
