Some info on redevelopment efforts:

Wheels Turning Slowly on Civic Arena Redevelopment | Essential Public Radio

Also found this manifesto of sorts from the Hill District consensus group. I don't agree with all of their positions but it was an interesting read in that I felt like I learned something about what the community's views are vis-a-cis this redevelopment:

The Travel Channel show "Off Limits" was about Pittsburgh this past weekend and a segment talked about the Civic Area. Very interesting, even for someone not from Pittsburgh. It took a balanced approach saying it was a technological marvel for its time but had become outdated.

I'm not sure I entirely understand the Essential Public Radio story. As it notes, the original deal had the Penguins taking the lead on the development, and from that story it sounds like the SEA and URA are now running the show (which is fine with me, but I'd like some clarification on whether that is really the case).

Another point about the Penguins was that they were to accrue fines for every year that parcels were not developed. The site is twenty-eight acres. They were to develop 10% per year for ten years. This was supposed start in either 2011 or 2012. The entire twenty-eight acre site is to be complete in ten years from today, more or less. According to URA Director Rob Stephany, he does not seem to optimistic about anything happening soon due to lack of developers who are interested. Are the Penguins still on the hook for this? Or is there "language" that let's them delay any development for another three or four years. I predicted when the Penguins played their last game there in 2010 that it would be a 2015 or so before we saw any development. I hope I am wrong, but this seems like a real possibility.
