That bridge that was build just north of the 31st St. Bridge for cyclists and walkers is a prime example and that is why that very expensive bridge was built. All the trails going north on the Allegheny have to work around all the RR tracks. They are high volume tracks for all the coal to get to Springdale that we burn and pollute everything for our plasma TV's and having every light on in the house every day all day. Sorry I had to throw that other stuff in there.

If a trail goes to Oakmont from the Highland Park Bridge, it will also have to work around the tracks. These are not rails to trails really, they are trails next to rails. Norfolk Southern HATES the cycle/walking people that want this stuff. HATE!!!! They will probably do everything in their power to stop any of it, but that is where money and powerful people hopefully will help smooth it over for the greater good of the communities involved.

Might as well tell you that the trail that goes down the Mon also deals with the RR Tracks. They are still there and will be there next to the trails.

You need to get out and walk some of these. They are really amazing and very enjoyable. Go on a cold day, so there aren't too many people. Yesterday the trails were FULL of people with lots of smiles. Probably the happiest people in the city use them.
I was on this trail today and yesterday during my lunch break. I rode from PNC park up to past the rowing club and up to where the trail is right next to the tracks. It is really a lovely ride!
Maybe I even saw ya!

Maybe. I was there today and decided to ride the tracks to Sharpsburg to really have a very close look at the possibility of a trail with the tracks there. About a mile of that would be pretty easy, but some of it looks like they would need to build a bridge. I was looking at it from a layman, sort of even though I have been around plenty of earth moving events in new construction. I have no idea how it would be done? From Sharpsburg to Aspinwall? Not saying it can't be done, but there needs to be some really deep pockets involved.

I hope that people at least join the Friends of the Riverfront. It is very cheap and IMHO a very good organization that is helping Pittsburgh connect to the rivers and there is no doubt this area is getting health benefits from all that great activity using all these beautiful trails.

Thanks for posting that. I keep crossing my fingers on the trail getting up to Sharpsburg from Millvale.

This is great. I biked downtown from Aspinwall a single time over the summer, and finding a way to get over to the start of the riverfront trail from there was more of I challenge than I thought it would be. You really have to go ridiculously far out and around to make it work.

With the trail expanded, though, the bike commute downtown from that area would be absolutely fantastic.
