I went to Aldi with a $5 off on $30 coupon, I spent more than I would normally have spent.

Some of the prices are excellent:

- .99 for a quart of strawberries. They aren't the best I've ever eaten -- those never leave Washington State -- but they are both tasty and they don't have the texture of rocks.

- .79 avocados, which I'll use in a couple of days for guacamole

- bags of plain white corn chips for $1.19

- jarred salsa, under $2 for a 1 pound 8 oz. jar; thick rather than watery. I'm not much of a jarred salsa fan, but if you are, I think you will enjoy this.

- small cans of diced tomatoes for .99. Since I only cook for one, I like the 14 oz. size better than the 28. But the large cans are usually such a better deal. I think it's $1.49 small at TJ's (and everywhere else), v. $1.99 for the large. Here, .99.

I didn't check out the cheese department, which I've been told on other forums is decent in some locations.

Since $30 was too much for me to spend, I brought the Coupon King with me. He liked the prices on bottled water, the strawberries, and some soy milk. I let him use $1.50's worth of the coupon.

When you check out, the cashier puts your groceries in another cart. Then you take that cart over to a table station, where you do your own packing. NBD for me, as I use self-checkout at GE, but it was a surprise.

All in all, it's a very nice addition to the neighborhood. It's unambiguously my closest grocery store, so I'll be shopping here often. I hope I can convince them to carry good bread and St. Andre. Then I might not feel a need to shop elsewhere.

Hm, 79 cent avocados. That might be something. I'm going through a fair number of them recently.

Thanks very much, Jay, for the review! I hope to check out ALDI next Tuesday (actually off work that day!) depending upon how long it takes for my car to get checked out at my garage.

O.O I have to check it out. Was it crowded? Where did you park?

It was extremely crowded. We went around 1 PM. There's a parking garage (free) on Roup Street, two doors down from Aldi. The parking wasn't particularly crowded, though.

I see. I might wait until next week.
I'm kicking myself. I used to live S. Fairmount and would walk back and forth to the GE. I moved into Highland Park for the cheaper rent. It would have been awesome to walk back and forth to Aldi's.

The only way Aldi's could be better is if they offered gas discounts of some kind. Giant Eagle is so expensive but now that I drive I want all the fuel perks I can get.

Stopped by at Aldi's today with the $5 coupon.

I don't know about that parking garage, with traffic signals and all that.

I wonder if it would be easier just park on Baum or Roup for evening/Sunday visits. Or maybe it would be better off just to go to the Etna Aldi from L'ville for a more traditional parking arrangement.

I noticed today that there are a couple of excavating machines in the former parking lot of the old Giant Eagle at Centre-Craig.

I noticed that the other day, too. That's where the new CVS (replacing the current one just down the street) is going.
