Why is New Castle listed 1st/2nd/3rd/4th/5th/6th/7th ?
Which are the safest areas of town and which should I avoid.
Browsing at homes for a possible move in the future but not in
a hurry. Thank you for your assistance.

I think the numbers refer to the wards of the city. Check the city's website, which may contain a map with the corresponding wards/neiggborhoods.

They are wards. I don't know the area but the housing is pretty sweet. Lots of Craftsman style homes.

For the size of community, I feel it's a trashy, crime ridden town.

North side, up in the suburban area that was built in the Postwar era and later, is the safest. There are nice historic homes all over the place, but blight and crime were spreading rapidly when I looked at homes there in 2008-2009. There were problems in that entire region due to Detroit drug gangs moving in. A lot of those gangs use/recruit kids, so idle latchkey kids are another plague. There were some shootings and holdups in areas of New Castle that had never had problems before, back in 2009-2010. Check New Castle News for what's going on now. (But maybe they made that subscription only now? It didn't used to be.)

Jameson Hospital, I noticed, has razed a number of buildings and has cleared almost that entire block for some kind of expansion. The Jameson On the Hill, I mean. Not the old Catholic hospital that they bought that's on the flat.

New Castle's history was metals, and it later had a nice existence due to Rt. 422 to Youngstown. While Youngstown boomed, New Castle, Sharon, Farrell, and Greenville thrived.

Yikes ! That doesn't sound good. Do you think Neshannock or Sharon areas would be better ? I was hoping some areas of New Castle would be safe. Their new downtown renovation looks nice.

I will be wanting to go into Youngstown [specifically the Unitarian Church at Wick Park] quite often but I do not want to live in Ohio.

There was a shooting earlier this week or very late last week that involved two Detroit playa's...............the holed up in a home and SWAT was called to get 'em out. There seems to be a rivalry between Sharon and Youngstown. Sounds like Chicago gangs claim Youngstown and Detroit claim New Castle
