And you should feel good about that. Dubois in central PA is pronounced Doo-Boys, but it's French, Doo-Bwaa, meaning "of the woods".

Why does this phonetic pronunciation bother you any more than Detroit not being pronounced Deh-twah, Beloit not being pronounced Bel-wah, Paris TX not being pronounced Pah-ree, etc.?

Why does something that I hear sometimes multiple times a day, being that I am in Pittsburgh, bother me more than three examples I have almost never heard spoken around me? (No, nobody talks about Detroit. Really.) You're really asking me this?

Pittsburgh should change its name to I'm With Stupid, and have a giant arrow pointing toward Cleveland.

If you change the name to Pull-My-Finger, PA I do NOT want to know about the accompanying official City Song...

That makes two of us.

The mispronunciation of areas is even done by the local media, it blows my mind. It's like willful ignorance reaching unprecedented levels for no reason.

Yes, but I guarantee if you try to pronounce "Versailles" the way it is supposed to be pronounced, (1) nobody will know what you're talking about, and (2) once they understand what you're talking about, they will correct you: "Versayles." That happened to me, so I know. The explanation I was given: "That's actually how it's pronounced."

Either that, or foreign names have taken on English phonetic pronunciations just like they have everywhere else in the English-speaking world.

Eh, if you ask any Yinzer how to pronounce "Jaromir Jagr" they're not going to say "jero-mere jag-er" they'll say "yaw-mer yaw-grr". Why is it tolerated for the names of places?

Because it's not the end of the world, that's why. I'm confident you don't walk around pronouncing Mexico "Me-hee-co" or Texas "Te-has" or Paris "Pah-ree" so you're guilty as charged.

When Pittsburghers start pronouncing their own city "Pitts-burough" then I'll listen to their complaints about phonetic Anglicization of city names.
