When I was still in Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh-Wuhan sister city organization often took visiting Chinese dignitaries there for dinner.
You live in Taiwan now? I spent a summer in Taiwan exactly 25 years ago. My father was assisting with research at Academia Sinica, and my family subleased an apartment in the Nankang district. I got to see Yangmingshan National Park, the Sun Yat-Sen and Chiang Kai-Shek Memorials, the National Palace Museum, and Snake Alley. We'd planned to go to Hualien the final week we were there, but a typhoon had other plans. I also got to go to the Yunxian Resort in Wulai, and the Formosa Water Park, which I just heard had a music concert go sideways there, unfortunately. Speaking of music, I got to listen to plenty of American and British music on ICRT, including American Top 40. Every time I hear "Enjoy The Silence" by Depeche Mode, it takes me back to Taiwan. It was in Taiwan that I had my first taste of Mongolian BBQ, and it's still the best Mongolian BBQ I've ever had.

Now I need to go back and see Taipei 101.

I have fond memories is sneaking into the Balcony for dinner, drinks, and jazz on Saturdays. I was under 21 and it was the early to mid 90s. Walnut has changed since then.

Yes, I've been in Taiwan since 1985, except for time in Pittsburgh going to grad school and getting my wife US citizenship. Even during our time in Pittsburgh, we traveled back to Taiwan frequently to visit her family and to look for employment possibilities for me.

I know all of the places you identify, but, I don't listen to ICRT, even though a good friend of mine is a DJ there.

Snake Alley is changed quite a bit from 25 years ago. And the CKS Memorial is now Freedom Square.

Yes, the event at the water park went badly. Tragic.

There is a very lively music scene in Taipei, now, both local and foreign, and we have many music festivals that do not go badly!

I just took a group of Saint Vincent College students to the Mongolian BBQ place on Nanjing Road a few weeks ago. SVC sends students over every summer and my boy, who just graduated from SVC, has been acting as their guide and translator these past several summers. He starts at Pitt for grad school in August.

You should come back to see how Taipei has changed, and to go to Taroko in Hualien! Taipei is like a different place, now. Mostly for the better.
