They replaced a red light district with a theater district. (Oversimplified, and over time, but roughly true from what I can tell.)

Thanks so much for posting this! I was wracking my brain trying to remember the name of the Chinese restaurant I went to years ago during a visit to Pittsburgh. Turns out it was the Chinatown Inn.

There's still nightlife in the Cultural District. There are three or four gay bars on Liberty Avenue downtown.
