I saw a sort of infommercial this morning on PCNC about Investment Property Guy Scott McGillivray coming to Pittsburgh to host investment property seminars.

I really have a problem with our fake economy as it is...created in great part by people pouring to vast part of their incomes on housing, trying to build wealth without enterprise by doing things like flipping houses, and jacking up rent as high as the market can possibly bear.

Once of the reasons why Pittsburgh has been called one of the most livable cities is its relatively affordable housing. I do not see that Pittsburgh has a lot of affordable low-income housing but at the middle tier, this city definitely has much more affordable housing than places like CA, AZ and DC (for example).

I admit that I enjoy watching some of the programming on HGTV but I have a problem with the way this network promotes higher and higher housing costs.

I've watched house hunters and the amount of house in other areas that people get for their budgets is ridiculously small.

I like HGTV, but they promote unsustainable housing prices way too much (especially after the housing slump). In fact some people say that this slump could last our entire generation, yet HGTV acts like the American standard of living is the same as it was in the 90's. I hope that not everyone thinks that if they slap on a coat of paint and add a his/her sink their housing price will jump up 60 grand like it does in some places.

Trust me -- out here, in my very hard hit zip code all the granite and stainless in the world couldn't save our houses from losing 75% of their value.

You're not kidding. There are small poorly kept 'shanties' in my hometown of Charleston WV going for over 100k....I don't get it? Not that Charleston isn't a great town in many ways, but with a lower cost of living than many other cities in other states the housing market shouldnt' be nearly that inflated. Makes me appreciate my $400 mortgage payment for our very large row house overlooking the Allegheny river.

Charleston WV has some affordable homes (less than 30k) listed. I'm not sure about the neighborhoods they are in, but Charleston can't be that bad, right? I guess Charleston has a history of eminent domain abuse, though.

I agree that HGTV promotes unsustainable housing prices. I remember an episode filmed in Detroit, where a realtor was showing a couple $300k homes in the city. Why on Earth would it be necessary to spend that much in Detroit, where you can buy homes for pennies on the dollar? It would be more interesting if HGTV did a series on liveable 10k (or less) houses in major cities.

They're leaving no stone unturned on their way out, it appears. I can't imagine anyone showing up to one of these events, although you know people will.

I think it's happening in Lawrenceville right now.

I really hope that's not the case. Western Pennsylvania didn't go and **** itself with the housing bubble, and it would be a goddamn shame to see it happen now.
