I have never attended the first night celebration in Pittsburgh but may do so this year with two teenagers. What is it like? I'm particularly interested in how the actual countdown to the new year is, and also the parking situation. I see from the website that Rusted Root is playing this year, which is a big appeal.

It gets better every year. My children (9 & 11) enjoy it and there are lots of things to do for all ages. It is very family oriented and most of the art galleries are open as well. There is an actual countdown with a Ball raising (instead of lowering) at the former Horne's Department Store. They also have parades and indoor / outdoor activities throughout the cultural district. Well worth the $8.00 pass.

Parking wise, sometimes I find it best to park at Station Square and take the quick walk across the Smithfield Street Bridge. Parking in Downtown is doable during events, but I prefer convenience. Station Square you can basically always park at and never have an issue. Ditching the vehicle in a safe place and then taking a walk is sometimes best!

That is pretty sound advice. How long is the walk? I bet parking across the river makes leaving a bit less of a traffic headache.

I work at Station Square and go Downtown for lunch and shopping quite often. Depending on your pace, I can be Downtown easily in under 10 minutes. I'm a fast walker though, but either way, it isn't a bad walk. For folks that might not be able to walk as easy, you can still park at Station Square and maybe grab the T into town.

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure I will Park at Station Square though since I'll be coming from the north. I'm not a late night person (going at the request of my 15 year old), so I may be anxious to get back home after midnight and will appreciate having my car at a nearby garage. I guess the main issue will be exiting traffic.

You could park in one of the North Shore lots or garages then.

You can park all over the place. The city is usually pretty cheap that night. Look around and see if it if $5.00, if not, check out the Strip. It is a good time, but ends really early, so you better plan something afterwards if you like to really kick it in on NYE! This isn't NYC or really a major city. Pittsburgh is really laid back on NYE.
