How do you go without getting some Thai in Squirrel Hill and see the little menorah-mobiles putting around?

I don't get it. Some of these people live within 30 minutes from the BEST that western PA has to offer and they don't even attempt to experience it.
The funny thing about those same people are............when asked, they are the first to jump and yell "I'm from "Pittsburgh" and they are the first to complain about how "hard" it is to find their way around the city

As funny as some of these stories are--they're all 100% true. Same applies to Vandergrift & Apollo areas. "PITTSBURGH" is said and then theatrical thunder and storm clouds roll in. God forbid Gertrude have a doctor's appointment in PITTSBURGH today...

Out that direction, a former co-worker and I would always laugh because you'll find the occasional brave locals that go to "PITTSBURGH" for their anniversary or for dinner some special night of the year...and get a hotel room of course. Then we have the exact opposite, the brave souls that commute to PITTSBURGH daily...oh my goodness!

Here's a true story...two friends of mine live in South Fayette. I love them to death, but they are the epitome of suburbanites--they don't leave the South Fayette area for basically anything. We went to an event in Oakland one night. That required them to come to my house on Mt. Washington. When they got here, they told me how far it was...(15 minutes tops without traffic?) ...and they told me about the traffic they sat in. I asked if they took the Parkway West. ... ... ... wait for it, shes in her late 30s, lifelong resident and says to me, "Wait, what's that?" ... I was like, "OMG, 376 inbound up to the Fort Pitt Tunnel!" ... "Yeah, I think...there's a tunnel definitely." I was laughing so hard and slightly disturbed at her shelteredness at the same time. And I have to add this in here because it makes this story all the better...she drives a Chevy Tahoe HYBRID! ... I love SUVs, but that part just puts the cherry on top of this sundae!

I'm always amazed how many city residents blast those that live in the suburbs. You rarely see the opposite.

It's a weird "holier than thou" thing that I've never actually seen in real life, just on these forums. Seriously, in all my years I've never seen someone offline sneer at "SUV driving suburbanites" like they do here. I have young dudes that live on the East side and suburban dudes in my office and there has never been a negative comment about their locale.

Different strokes for different folks is dead on here apparently.

I personally don't "blast" those that just generally live in the suburbs...I would move to a close suburb personally in a heart beat. However, I am well traveled throughout a lot of nooks and crannies in Western PA! I do find the mentality that's being discussed purely amusing. Keep in mind, there are plenty of city residents that barely leave their neighborhood and the same instances apply. If you said "North Hills" to some city residents, they'd have no idea where you're referring to, how to get there, and what's there. General shelteredness, IMO, only hurts the individual, but hey, to each their own.

This is true. I know a number of hep young cats who live in the East End who won't go to, say, Dormont because it's too far away.

Really? I see people do that all the time, including here, and there is a major local newspaper with such an editorial theme.

Personally, I wish it would all stop: all of us in the metro area should be working together--particularly in light of the fact we are getting mistreated at other levels of government--and not constantly bickering amongst ourselves.

I think 90+% of the people posting here feel that way. That over 10-% is just very vocal (and to be fair, it doesn't make much sense to go out of your way to state you don't particularly care about something).

The only reason for that is is because most of the message boards on the websites for the local newspapers and TV stations have been done away with. I vividly remember the way suburbanites tore the city to shreds on the message boards for both the Tribune-Review and The Pittsburgh Channel.

LOL! It really does feel like the thunder clouds roll in when they say they're going to Pittsburgh. The funny thing is, we're only a block away from the city when they say this! (the Waterworks Mall is a block away and legally part of the city) It's annoying to me when they say they live in a small town like they're in Mayberry and get shocked when anything happens. Some people forget (in the city and suburbs) they are in the middle a of county with over a million residents and not in the middle of the farms.
