I don't work for any of the big name hospitals, just one of the smaller ones in the suburbs of pittsburgh, and my position is only that of a tech. But I hope one day to be a PA and one of the first things I will do is get the heck out of pittsburgh if that ever happens. I'm not sure how long you and your wife have been working, but if you still have any significant amonut of student loans, then I wouldn't come here. People lament the fact that the young professionals tend to leave the city when they graduate, and sing the priases of the "low cost of living here" but while cost of living is low, the cost of education is not. I know that if do achieve my goal of becoming a PA i'll be looking at over 100k in student loans and could not afford to make the $30/hr I saw on UPMC's job openings for PAs (to me that's downright insulting to advertised "master's preferred" yet don't compensate for the advance degree) While a blue collar worker may find pittsburgh desirable because it allows them to live better than they would anywhere else on their lower salary, you'll find the opposite is true for professionals here. The lower salaries + student loans means they will have a lower quality of life then they would their counterparts who started where their advance degree is appropiately compensated. Just my two cents.

What is a typical PA salary range in Pittsburgh (considering yrs experience, specialty, perks)?

Are there plentiful jobs, or are they difficult to come by?

I purchased a salary survey from the American Academy of Physician Assistants, which I just opened tonight. Preliminary read shows that Pennsylvania in general has lower than average wages for PAs. Will post more as I digest the 80 page work.
