It is very rare for companies to conclude they would be better off if their competitors merged and became more efficient.

What they actually want in most cases is for some of their competitors to be forced to liquidate, which both frees up market share and eliminates competition, and sometimes also frees up assets they can buy for cheap.

So absent truly compelling evidence to the contrary, I would assume Delta would prefer an AA liquidation over a USAir/AA merger. Where they would rank a Delta/AA merger would likely depend on the exact terms of that merger, meaning they would want to know how cheaply they could get AA's assets, including the cost of any liabilities they also had to take.

probably none. ive had plenty of bad experiences on american. i was reading an article about it this weekend and it seems most think a us air american merger is more likely than delta though its likely us air will be the acquiring company in practical terms rather than american. opinion was split on what it meant...european ops out of philly or charlotte...but no real change in pit. if us air leaves pennsylvania maybe well get southwest back
