That is a lovely shade of purple.
It doesn't look like anyone dyed it, though. More pictures of the royal squirrel in this article:

I like the port-a-potty theory.

Nobody noticed that what that guy did is illegal. It's illegal to capture a nuisance animal, and release it somewhere else. It's supposed to be destroyed.

Dude, it was a purple squirrel who became an Internet sensation. You can't just kill it--and celebrities are above the law anyway.

Edit: By the way, I'm not saying the above was an officially authorized response, but going after cute little animals because someone said they might have something to do with fracking would be a very, very inept PR move.

Hubby doesn't believe in purple squirrels. He thinks someone dyed it.

Agreed, but it looks like he has been moving a lot of squirrels, not just the purple one.

I can see a new Hollywood fashion statement. Paris Hilton will get rid of the chihuahua, and start carrying a purple squirrel.

Hell, I wouldn't mind having a yard full of purple squirrels. Throw in some blue bunnies, and you have the ultimate Easter decorations.

Really? Hm. Although squirrels coming to bird feeders hardly qualifies as nuisance animal I would think. They're just doing what they do. It's a stupid way to deal with that problem anyway, never-ending trapping.

So I'm not allowed to live-trap mice and release them as hawk food?

You would have to read through it, but it looks like there is a exemption for rabbits, and squirrels.

Doesn't look like that's limited to rabbits and squirrels. This seems to be the key part:

"Wildlife taken alive may not be retained alive, sold, or given away. Live wildlife may be relocated to a natural setting. Any wildlife killed must be reported to the Game Commission."

You can't retain it alive, but you can relocate it alive. Although in another part it says you shouldn't relocate rabies vector species like raccoons, groundhogs, etc. So maybe that would effectively limit you to rabbits and squirrels.

The part about them getting calls because people a trapped skunk by mistake is pretty damned funny though!

Anyway, sounds like the squirrel people weren't doing anything wrong, although you'd think it might have occurred to them to check if a biologist or such wanted to take a look at the purple one, as opposed to just treating it as an oddity and releasing it. Maybe they did though and nobody wanted to.
