That will be a nice addition to the retail mix in East Liberty.

I'm also interested to see the plans developing for the last phase of Eastside (I think they are talking about the area where the bus loop is being removed):

Quote:
In addition to leasing the former Borders space, Mosites says his company is doing pre-leasing for a development that will occur on a parcel near Target, which will be the final four acres of the greater Eastside development. For this site, Mosites plans to continue developing retail tenants, but could also include levels of office and apartment spaces.
It would be great if it included some apartments.

Can't argue with this, I guess, although I hope Smiley's around the corner can maintain a niche. It probably can if they choose the right product mix (i.e. food from companies that are too low volume to be sold in Petsmart).

i bet smiley's will do fine, they do carry a lot of stuff that isn't carried by the bigger pet stores.

i haven't been to smiley's much, but i was surprised to find that animal nature, another small pet store at forbes & braddock, has way better prices on some premium foods that are carried by the bigger retailers in addition to having things they don't carry. you'd think more volume would equal lower prices but apparently that's not always true.

also i despise peta but i do think they're right in this case. it's not really surprising that small animals sold in pet stores are mistreated. when you have animals being treated as products in such large volumes, it's sort of inevitable that they're not going to be treated well as living beings. people just don't care as much about small animals as they do cats and dogs, so this is overlooked. this is true of pretty much any pet store that sells mammals, reptiles, amphibians or birds and quite a lot of stores that sell fish. usually these creatures are coming from the bird/rodent/fish/reptile version of a puppy mill.

I hear ya on that. It's not really surprising. Really, we've gotten big stores not to sell dogs and cats at least but it's harder with the smaller animals I'm sure. Small animals aren't often available in shelters and rescues and other such alternative channels, although sometimes they are. Animal Friends has a bunch of rabbits hanging around looking for homes.

Peta is of course hypocritical on this (save small animals, but kill cats), although that's really a topic for another place I know....

Sadly animals get killed in every state, including Pennsylvania.

As for the PetSmart in East Liberty... well, I guess that's good news. I do hope that if there's another wilding incident the kids won't try to "free the pets" or something stupid like that.

Peta takes in cats in Norfolk and kills them without bothering to try to adopt them out. It's not the fact that they are killed, it's who is doing it, how it happens, and the message they are otherwise trying to promote. It's not a dig on Virginia if that's your problem. That just happens to be where the Peta facility is. They report the stats to the state every year, which gives a handy way to confirm them right on their web site.
