Interesting article:

Fairmont's success is good business for Downtown hotels

Overall I think it is great the Fairmont has been so well-received, but I am a little concerned about rate trends Downtown. Fortunately, some other projects are in the works that should be more affordable, such as the hotel component of the Market Square Garden project, but I also think Downtown could use a couple "boutique" hotels that would be interesting and attractive for visitors who don't need four-star service and in-house amenities (and don't need to pay for them).

Would be nice if Kimpton would open a place Downtown.

It used to be that we could stay downtown anytime for $99-$125 a night.

Now the lowest we have been able to stay for is $150... usually it is more like $175, and even higher when there's football weekends/interleague play/etc on the North Shore.

And that's NOT at the Fairmont.

Yeah, rates seem to be going up in general, and I'm not sure it really has much to do with the Fairmont per se (if its a pricing issue, odds are it is a matter of supply and demand).

I think it's that there's more demand to stay in Downtown whether it be for business or pleasure.

All of my Kimpton experiences have been really weak. Poor customer service, dated interiors. It's like staying overnight in a tacky version of IKEA with a bunch of drunk idiots. It'd be nice to have something more unique*– such as that ACE Hotel announcement. Whereisit!?

With that said, a boutique downtown with a big bar component would be killer and is much needed to jump start the nightlife. A huge sky bar would be amazing. I'm really surprised the Fairmont didn't land one, honestly.

yes, downtown improves every year as a place to stay BUT the fairmont is very nice and definitely adds a new level of service to the city. you can watch the game with the binoculars they give you if you're facing pnc park.

MUCH better! At least the hotel portion. I kind of dug the simplicity of the taller office portion.

I always liked the geometry of the design--I'm quite pleased with it overall now. It will look cool along with Three PNC and PNC Tower.
