Just say no to Fayette County...I grew up there, my friends and family like to refer to it as "Fayettenam". Uniontown, C'Ville, Pointe Marion, Brownsville..just don't do it. None are necessarily "bad" places, but they're by far the most depressed and backward towns within the Pittsburgh Metro Area and fit a lot of WV-style stereotypes. Brownsville and Pointe Marion are a trip, they're about a breath away from becoming ghost towns. You'll run into some very strange folk and see a lot of things to put it politely, the area is very clannish and good ol' boys in terms of mentality. Kind of like stepping back in time, and if you didn't go to high school and grow up in these towns then you know nobody and nobody will want to know you. The places to check out and consider are Morgantown WV(great little progressive college town), Washington, Greensburg, Monroeville, etc. Live in one of the other communities and work in Connellsville if that's your option. Especially considering that you're coming from NYC...you'll be in for one heck of a culture shock if you live anywhere short of a stone's throw to Pittsburgh. I'd try to stay as close to Pittsburgh proper as you possibly can, but in the very least stay out of Fayette County.

In my opinion, Connellsville isn't very desirable, and it's not because of the "hickish" vibe, but because there's really nothing in the way to do down there and the shopping is pretty limited to say the least. Nearby Uniontown has a little more activity but it's not much better... most of the commerce involves big box retailers down there and the mall is mediocre at best. Greensburg may be a better option for you but commutewise, it can take upwards of an hour or longer depending on rush hour traffic and whatnot. If you REALLY need to get into town within a reasonable period of time, I would look closer into Pittsburgh, preferably within Allegheny County, or north of the city in southern Butler County.

guess it depends on what youre lookin for. coming from nyc, connellsville is heaven on earth. true you dont have the civic light opera, true you dont have a subway; but you do have rural pa living which doesnt even measure crime and being safe to walk our neighborhood because its taken for granted. your biggest decision is to remember to lock your door. (thats why none of he foregoing responses addressed ur questions of whether its a safe place. sure it is. yeah, true, you give up living amongst the hip "takers" to ensure your family lives in a wonderously safe place they will always emember as home, but maybe your question really is .....what are my own values.
p.s. connellsville is on THE greatest bike trail: the Great Allegheny Passage, which provides a beautifully scenic bike trail extending from pittsburgh to wash dc. online. check it out. hope ive been genuine.
