To an extent, it just depends how technically savvy the person sending the e-mail is. If they're going through multiple layers of proxies and/or are using e-mail services hosted in other, uncooperative countries, there won't be much of a lead to go on.

An email was sent out by Pitt at 2:29 expressing exasperation, trying to reassure that everything is being done to catch the culprits, and asking for help in catching them, monetary reward or no.

Twelve minutes later, there was word of yet another threat for the Cathedral. That is the fifth bomb threat in twenty-four hours and 12th overall.

Story's been picked up by Reuters:
Rash of bomb threats target University of Pittsburgh | Reuters

An excerpt from the Chancellor's statement:
Quote:
Each threat has been taken seriously, with safety standing as our highest priority. Careful searches of each evacuated building, using trained canine units from within the University and from other area police departments, have detected no evidence of any explosives of any kind at any site. We are thankful for that result and are deeply grateful for the help we have received, both in clearing buildings and in pressing forward with the ongoing investigation, from many other law enforcement agencies. In fact, it should be underscored that those efforts represent one of the many significant costs resulting from these threats – that limited police resources have been reallocated from other pressing matters to be invested in the security of this campus.
The inability to bring this succession of threats to a quick end obviously is a source of frustration for everyone whose life has been disrupted by them. But I can assure you that law enforcement professionals are doing everything they can to pursue all possible leads. And, as most of you already know, in addition to the police work and related efforts being undertaken within the University itself, we have offered a very substantial reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for these crimes.
Even without the motivation that might be provided by a reward, I ask all members of the University community to be especially attentive to any unusual activity and to share any relevant information with the University of Pittsburgh Police.
Chancellor Issues Update About Campus Bomb Threats | Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg | University of Pittsburgh

What is the point in removing the restroom stall doors? If the university is treating these bomb threats as legitimate, as they claim, doesn't removing the stall doors just deter the bomb-placer from relaying the information regarding the bomb's time and location?

Actually catching the person would yield a lot more info than whatever they write on the wall.

1019: General bomb threat, Thackeray Hall (Registrar's office, Student Payment Center, etc.)

Not looking good for local law enforcement.

Nor the FBI I suppose. Even if they monitor every bathroom in every building on campus, threats could still come in from phones or email or whatever. I doubt it can be fully prevented unless they either catch who is doing it or whoever is doing it decides to stop.

Such a random building. Though back in the day when you had to register in person (I am guessing you can register online now), I could understand it being a target more. How many Pitt students have been there frustratingly trying to find open classes...
