My wife, daughter two dogs and myself are moving to the Pittsburgh area for work. Does anybody know of any safe and lower priced temporary stay places?

The dogs may be problematic. Is there a relative or someone that can temporarily house them until you get settled in a permanent residence? I am going to guess that the dogs aren't going to work with most temporary housing options.

You may have issues with the dogs, but there are kennels that could temporarily house them... ? If that's an option for you, of course.

Perhaps Oak Hill or Allegheny Commons... IMO affordable safe areas are: Polish Hill, Oakland, Elspen, and part of the Mon Valley.

Also, is your daughter school aged?

We had to do a corporate apartment (we paid for it though) in Mt Lebanon because we had a dog. 3K/mo for 900 sq ft. On the plus side, utilities, weekly cleaning services, and Internet were paid for.

Actually, Polish Hill's housing costs have been appreciating at a moderate clip over the past few years. When I moved here in late-2010 I was paying $550/month for my 1-BR apartment, which I thought was a bargain, but others balked, saying it was "high for the neighborhood". Last month my landlady had a lot of interest in the unit at $650/month. I'm paying $700/month for the other unit in the rowhouse, and I suspect this will climb when I renew my lease. There are fewer and fewer bargains available in the East End. I'm actually surprised more people aren't investing in Polish Hill; we have so many blighted properties and such a tight rental market.

There's lots of investment going on in Pittsburgh, but there's even more neighborhoods that could use it.
