whats wrong with flashing lights? maybe not high beems but a quick on/off/on/off beforehand can keep those 4 ways moving..

anyway, i believe most drivers suck, but only think other people do. most of the people complaining about one thing are doing a totally different thing to screw up the flow and don't even know it.

for instance, you hate people that slow down at merges...fine. some irritate me too, most people don't go in a lot of spaces they would fit fine if they just gun it a tiny bit.
but if you are already on the parkway and driving toward an on ramp..do you slow down to let the trucks get over into the left lane?
cost yourself 10 seconds?
or do you start passing the truck[s], so he can't get over..the merger gets in front of him at 40mph, causing the truck to slow to 40mph..takes him a good minute to get back up to full speed, and thats not if you aren't going uphill...screwing up the flow of the right lane forever. (and usualy the left as well)
i would wager that a lot of people that 'pass the truck' are the same people that complain when the merger in front of them slows down because a huge truck is in the lane.

Haven't noticed during my twice yearly visits. I'm talking about several cars running the light after it's been red for 3 or more seconds.

Isnt the fact that car insurance here is on the low end of rates indicative that drivers here must not be any worse the anywhere else, and in fact must be a bit better.

Ahhhh, the perfect thread to vent about my evening drive...

I still stand by my belief that Pittsburgh drivers are extremely timid compared to most areas of the country. It was reinforced this evening as I was trying to make a left turn at a green light. This car was coming in the opposite direction with their right turn signal on, so I was just patiently waiting for her to make her right turn so I could follow. But she kept slowing down and came to a complete stop at the green light, looking at me like I was supposed to go first. Seriously? Just ******* go!!!! You clearly have the right of way, I'm the one trying to cross traffic...JUST GO!

I don't know if she was being "courteous", afraid, or just stupid, but it's so frustrating when people here randomly give up the right of way since there is no rhyme or reason to it, adding confusion to what should be a perfectly orderly traffic situation. I see this type of behavior often here, and NEVER saw this back in FL. They'll NEVER give up the right of way down there, AND will tailgate you at 100mph. But that's for a bad driving thread for a different city forum.

With this rant aside I do concur with the majority consensus that Pittsburghers, overall, are above-average drivers. Considering my second job entails me delivering food generally throughout the East End, South Side, and Mt. Washington I'm a rather authoritative source. I find most people here, while passive, are also very courteous, especially when it comes to letting people pull in and out of parking lots onto busier roadways. A good example of this would be to watch people trying to turn left out of the GetGo parking lot onto Baum Boulevard in Shadyside-ish/Bloomfield-ish. Quite often people across four lanes of traffic will coordinate to let some poor sap (or sapette) out of the parking lot.

I refuse to complain. Compared to the other cities I've been in, Pittsburgh drivers tend to be pretty polite.

It's my observation that Pittsburgh drivers poke on the freeways but speed and break all kinds of laws while on city streets and residential areas. Stop signs seem to be mere suggestions and stop lights are ran on a frequent basis throughout the city and region. Maybe half of the drivers use their turn signals. I was in the Cincinnati area recently and most drivers there were using turn signals, even when cutting you off!

Also I wish drivers would move over so you can merge onto the freeway. I've notice western PA is bad about this. I travel throughout the tri-state and the one car that's not moving over is always from PA. Yet they will stop in the middle of a busy multiple lane road and let someone in front of them who doesn't even have the right of way. Crazy!

But compared to most places, drivers here aren't that terribly bad. Go up to Connecticut or the Boston area...those drivers are insane!

Pittsburgh drivers are less aggressive in comparison to other places, but far more stupid. I don't find people cutting me off, beeping, and speeding past me, but I do find people blowing through stop signs/red lights, doing the Pittsburgh Left, busting out u-turns wherever they want, speed in parking lots/residential areas, don't use turn signals, and don't watch when changing lanes.

Now if you want real insane drivers, go drive in Paris.
